Would dirt be okay for a snake cage?

Asked by pinkwolf (4points) May 30th, 2012

I’ll be getting a ball python and was wondering if dirt is an okay substrate. Also if there are worms in the dirt to decompose the snake poop and skin would it really have to be cleaned often?

@pinkwolf Be patient! You asked this just half an hour ago, and the people who would know the answer to your question just aren’t on right now. It’s a pretty specific question, you can’t just expect there to be several snake experts on the site immediately. Personally, I would advise you to go to your local pet store and ask someone who works in that department.

Newspaper

Dirt is a poor choice as a substrate since you’d need to keep sanitizing it. Ideally you want a substrate you can easily clean out.

Personally I would use either aspen bedding with a bottom layer of newspaper, or newspaper sheets on the bottom with shredded newspaper on top.

No, dirt and worms are not a good substrate, and relying on consumption and decomposition as a method of cleaning is not a good idea.

There are some good resources online specific to herpetology husbandry; I’d recommend some research.

No, as others have said, dirt is bacteria laden and hard to clean.
Do your homework on Ball Pythons and the best habitats for them. Make sure you do your best to create a healthy and happy habitat for the snake. It’s life counts too and you should never get a pet of any kind if you do not do your research and aren’t prepared to create the best living conditions for the animal as possible.

I’d create as awesome of a habitat as you can, a large tank, climbing branches, hiding places and a good substrate.
