I’m a documentary fan and a few I have watched lately that were really good, via Netflix, are:

The last days of Pompei

Cloud, wild stallion of the rockies

Nature, 25 years

Life after people

Lions ( which tells, in part, the story of Christian the lion ) very good

Germs, guns and steel

@Coloma Exactly what I’m looking for. Thanks!

Are you in the UK? Do you have access to BBC Iplayer If you do there are tons of great docs on there. Also on 4OD although I am not sure if that works outside the UK. Also try topdocumentary or topdocumentaryfilm
It really depends on your personal preference but there are tons to choose from on those sites!

@bongo No. From Canada.

I found “Lord, Save Us From Your Followers”..

The Cove. A very important piece of work, and both easier and harder to watch than I anticipated.

Eternal Enemies (by Beverly and Derek Joubert, one of the greatest wildlife teams ever, IMO).

For sheer mind boggling HD beauty, the Planet Earth series and Frozen Planet

@syz Oh yes, I saw ” The Cove”.
I had no idea how much Dolphins go for to commercial sea parks. Tragic but informative.

@syz Watched that. Rather upsetting. The sound that they made broke my heart.

Capturing the Friedmans and Dear Zachary (don’t google, it will spoil it).

Sagan’s Cosmos. It’s on hulu or youtube.

Mama_Cakes's avatar

“Capturing the Friedmans” @nikipedia, caught that one, too.

I’ll see if the other is on Netflix.

Also, Which One’s Pink? , a documentary about PF from their early days to their final performance as a band together in 2005 at Live 8

Mama_Cakes's avatar

My girlfriend and I have watched a lot of Sagan. Saw that one.

Oh my gosh..I cannot remember the NAME of this, but, there is a documentary about this developmentally disabled guy that builds these elaborate villages with hand painted Barbis and GI Joes and re-creates scenes from WW11 and other historical periods…it is AMAZING! Anyone know what I’m talking about, have a name? I’ll have to ask my daughter, she is the one that discovered this. The guy is crazy but beyond talented.

“Also, Which One’s Pink? , a documentary about PF from their early days to their final performance as a band together in 2005 at Live 8”.

Ooh, I’ll look for that.

Mama_Cakes's avatar

Saw this “Making of the Dark Side of the Moon”.

Syd Barrett was nuts.

Either Jazz or Prohibition by Ken Burns.

I switched over to Dear Zachary.

Mama_Cakes's avatar

Almost done Dear Zachary. I have no words.

All that I can say is shame on the Canadian government.

I highly recommend Nikipedia’s suggestion, Dear Zachery, to you all.

The Last Waltz. It’s about The Band’s last performance.

The expansion of the American West,
as portrayed in the classic film Blazing Saddles

The BBC documentary “Homeless” is pretty powerful.

Catfish – about an online relationship that wasn’t what it appeared to be. Excellent lesson and fascinating outcome.

Prodigal Songs – about two brothers, one was adopted, one had a sex change, and their relationship, mental health and family issues.

Picture Me -about a model and the life of models. It’s not all glamour and megabucks like it appears to be.

I think all three were either on Sundance Channel or HBO. I see a lot of documentaries on Sundance.

In reference to my post above, in the documentary Prodigal Sons, the adopted son turned out to be the biological son of two celebrities. Fascinating. All three that I listed above are great documentaries.

Oooh…just watched ” Eye of the Leopard” a Nat. Geo. doc. excellent! Leopards are so cool!

Two more – I just saw Grizzy Man on Sundance, which is about a guy who lived amongst the grizzlies in Alaska. He was very into the bears, and one ended up killing him.

Another one, coming up on Sundance Monday, 6/5/12, is called Carny. It’s about the people that work and travel with carnivals, their lives and what it’s like for them. It’s a whole subculture of people. Very interesting. it would be nice to see a follow up done on this one.

Coloma's avatar

@jca I have Grizzly Man in my keeper collection. He was insane, but you couldn’t help but like him. lol

jca's avatar

@Coloma: he was kind of cute, but definitely crazy.
