Why do some people seem to have a difficult time processing what is being said to them?

This was on Judge Judy. Gal’s car was vandalized (keyed) in the parking lot at her work. The woman was, maybe, 42, obviously a native English speaker.
Judge Judy: “Were any other cars in the parking lot vandalized?”
Lady: “One.”
Judge Judy: “Were any other cars in the parking lot, other than your own, vandalized?”
Lady: “One.”
Judge Judy gave it another shot. She said, “Your car?”
Lady says, “Yes.”
Judge Judy: “Was your car the only one?”
Lady: “Yes.”

Any thoughts on this? It just seemed a little weird.
