What do we NOT see on Chopped?
Chopped, the Food Network cooking competition, puts competitor Chef together to make good meals with odd ingredients. Everyone knows that but what happens on the set that doesn’t show up on TV?
They make it seem like the open there basket and immediately start cooking yet there are quick mid session interviews and such. Also, they are always finishing up within seconds, every time!
I understand it’s a TV show and needs to be edited to be entertaining but I am just curious what really happens. I think they get more time then we are led to believe.

I think that what you do not see is the time in between courses when the kitchens are cleaned up and everything is reordered.
The chefs are on the room they go into with water bottles and there is where the in-between interviews are done.
They see the baskets a few seconds before the round starts and the timed round is all the cooking time that they have.
but if I’m not mistaken, they have quick interviews, off the kitchen set, about the ingredients.
I’d imagine cursing. Lots of cursing.
“Popcorn and Reece’s Pieces!!?! What the $¢& am I supposed to !€§
do with that?!?”
We rarely see something I would actually eat.
I’m a fan of Chopped too. What you don’t see is the banks of cameras. You don’t see the editing. The time they are given to cook adds up to more than an hour; plus the chat between the judges and between the contestants. So the shows are edited. As always, it would be fun to see the production to see how it works, but that’s not likely. Same thing for another favorite of mine, Survivor. There they are on a desert island, alone, with many cameras and people behind each of them. It’s show biz.
I would imagine they know what’s in the basket a little bit before they start, or they are presented with a variety of options and one is chosen at random. I would never be able to come up with something so quick but God, do I love that show ^.^
I agree they probably have a lot more time than what we are led to believe, not even accounting for editing. They also seem to select ingredients for the competitors’ backgrounds. What I have never seen on Chopped is sushi.
