Of course, you can always go for the “free” version of Phototshop, if you know what I mean.

Well I just downloaded Gimp. And the Windows emulator you need to run it.

Paint.NET

Gimp is a good one, you could also try Open Canvas. I haven’t used it in years so I can’t really vouch for it, but I know plenty of other people like it.

@Qingu Why would you need a windows emulator? There’s a linux version.

A second vote for paint.net. great program and free.

There is also GIMP, but it is too complicated for my needs.

If you are a student, you can get Photoshop for around $200, if you want.

GIMP is available in the Ubuntu Software Centre, or the default repos for most mainstream Linux distros.

You could also try Inkscape.

ArtRage is my favorite. It mimics real mediums and is under $90 for the top of the line version.

My three faves have all been mentioned: Gimp, Paint.Net and ArtRage.

if you have a relatively new MAC – go to the APP store app and download these two killer apps: Sketchbook Express… and Sketchbook Copic edition… (verify compatible with your operating system)
