How do I clean/sterilize a pair of earrings?

Asked by sfgal (283points) June 18th, 2012

I bought a pair of earrings at a garage sale. I want to sterilize them before putting them in my ears. Is it sufficient to clean the wires (the parts that go through pierced ears) with rubbing alcohol from the drugstore, or is there anything else I should do?

I think alcohol is fine.

Rubbing alcohol will work just fine. Enjoy your new earrings.

I would burn them a bit too

Rub them under some hot, soapy water, which will get the germs off, not just dead.

Boiling water

I’ve been stuck in the past and have used Vodka. Did the trick nicely.

If they need a deeper cleaning how about one of those ultrasonic cleaners, with alcohol in the soak water for good measure.

Hydrogen peroxide works well.

You might consider an alcohol or peroxide bath, since neither chemical is expensive and you can get everything that way.
