What unusual or uncommon genre of music do you listen to?

Asked by glenjamin (2505points) June 20th, 2012

For me, I have a fascination with rock covers of music from video games. I also like Japanese Doujin music, which is often very similar in style. Other than that I occasionally dig string quartet renditions of rock songs. How about you?

I like a little of everything, in fact I work at a major radio station. Ppl think I’m weird because I find screamo relaxing actually…I love classical music, some country artists, love Vietnamese music, monk chanting and seriously, some of everything.

I like elevator music and Gregorian Chant and other plainchant type music.

I like traditional Irish music played on the uillean pipes

I return to my Norwegians singing on boats. Not run-of-the-mill, I guess, although I am becoming fonder and fonder of them. Accompanied on accordion and boat whistle.

Kipparikvartetti – Saimaan valssi

I totally get down with New Age. I’ll Enya all night long!

On Sunday mornings, I love to put on indian music videos. The dancing is so odd, the music is so strange, and the costumes are vivid colors.

@fundevogel Holy hell. Folktronica is awesome. Never knew that was a genre, very cool.

@gailcalled I admit, that you mentioned Norway intrigued me, but I ended up liking this quite a lot. Really catchy and cool.

I don’t think any of what I listen to is unusual…my favorite genre is Industrial. It is an underground genre, one I’ve been in love with for more than 15 years, particularily the synthpop branch. Below are some samples from some faves of mine;

Das Ich
VNV Nation
Funker Vogt
Grendel
Suicide Commando
Wumpscut

I listen to a whole lot of music, but Industrial is definitely my favorite. Viking/folk/pagan metal is quickly being an equal, though. Not that said genre is really all that unusual either though. Samples anyways, that aren’t Ensiferum or Folkodia; (which I still love to death bit everyone knows about em so)

Les Bâtards du Nord
Hel (rock oriented)
Eluveitie
Forefather

Also, Kristen Lawrence rules.

@Symbeline jesumlordmercy I love me some mouth harp in metal. Glad you like the folktronica.

Berserker's avatar

At first the mouth harp really weirded me out…but these dudes have a way to make you like things. :)

fundevogel's avatar

I just love mouth harp in general its all boingboingboingboingboing which just makes me smile and sticking it a metal song makes me glad all over.

It is indeed pretty fucking slick. I bet you can’t be a smoker to do that shit. Not really related, but I once heard Inuit throat music, which is also very impressive. A bit odd, but I thought it was cool. All I can do with my mouth is say fuck, I envy the skills of some of those people.

fundevogel's avatar

knowing you I bet you can say it in French as well :)

Berserker's avatar

Hell yeah I can! Fouttre, (getting packed…so to speak) or crosse/crosser (fucking, fuck, getting fucked, and is often used for getting fucked over, as in ripped off, played for a fool, what have you) are the French equivalents thereof. ’‘Vas te faire mettre’’ is the politically correct way to tell someone to go fuck themselves. Basically, go get yourself done, as in, I’d totally do that @fundevogel chick.

:D

ain’t gettin’ too personal, am I?

fundevogel's avatar

oh @Berserker, you know one of these days we’re going to have throw caution to wind and proclaim our forbidden love for each other. Or maybe hangout for real. As a certain bastard would say, my body is ready.

gailcalled's avatar

@Symbeline: Fouttre? Foutre?

fundevogel's avatar

omg! You pedant in French too! :D

New Age is one, yes. Celtic Woman, Enya, Vangelis.

Classical is not unusual, but among people I know, it is. Especially the extent to which I listen to it. Not just the occasional Mozart or Beethoven piece.

The most uncommon would have to be that I love obscure foreign pop music, like music from Turkmenistan, Ghana, or Eritrea. It’s cool :)

Berserker's avatar

@DominicX Celtic Women are great. That’s all. :)

@fundevogel The winds aren’t violent enough for us. But yeah, love that bastard. :D

@gailcalled Fuck I denno, you tell me lol.

fundevogel's avatar

Ah, well Symbeline’s reminded me of another little genre I enjoy. Chanson. This one’s for you.

GoDogGo's avatar

Dirty Dog music really does it for me.

DeanV's avatar

Whatever this is. Dunno if it’d technically be called IDM or Juke, but it’s absolutely fantastic.

Gamelan music from Bali.

@DominicX Having read the music you enjoy, you may really appreciate Sarah Bettens (if you haven’t already heard her). There is a Dutch band called Blof who sing a song called Dansen aan Zee.

Here is Blof’s version video of the song. Here is Blof with Sarah Bettens singing the song at a concert and here is Sarah Bettens singing it with an orchestra backing her up (partner in the audience). I just love the last version and I think she is gorgeous!

Noise. This is the Black Dice. I was lucky enough to see these guys perform last month; amazing stuff.

Blondesjon's avatar

I’ve recently started getting in to Barkcore which is Elvis tunes being covered by a fella beating a bunch of various sized cats with a bunch of various sized dogs. Real cutting edge shit.

@wildpotato . . . I downloaded Creature Comforts a few weeks ago. I really like ‘em.

YARNLADY's avatar

Due to having two preschoolers in the house, I get a lot of children’s songs in my head.

Blackberry's avatar

I wouldn’t say uncommon, just not mainstream. I listen to what people call “elevator music”. This could be anything from deep house to chill-out music.
