Can you play a 3D movie from a usb stick/external hard drive on a 3D TV?

I couldn’t find a clear answer anywhere.
I have a 3D TV. Can I play 3D movies from a USB stick/external hard drive, or do I have to buy the 3D Blue-ray player as well?
