What adventure did you send your child off to do?
In a couple of days, my daughter is taking her first plane flight on her own. She’s changing flights in a strange airport and leaving the country on her own for the first time as well. She wanted to do this and seems very excited about it. I’m glad she’s going to do it. She’s on a leadership development program and will be helping fix up a school in Guatemala with 20 other kids from around the world.
I was 20 the first time I left the country on my own. She’s 16. That was quite an adventure for me. When I stepped off the plane in Belgium, I had no money for food and I had to take a train halfway across Europe before I would meet my family. At least my daughter will have emergency money in case something happens.

That sounds fabulous! My stepkids have no ambitions to go out of country to help anyone or learn anything about other people or else we would have done it in a heartbeat. I think 15 or 16 is pretty fine for a kid to travel alone. Within a country, just the traveling part, I started when I was 5 on my own and didn’t have any misadventures in airports or whatever.

I don’t have kids, but I was 17 when I first flew alone out of the country. I went to Spain and France and met up with other kids for a program. An now as a young, single woman, I travel alone a lot out of the country. I think it is good to do so that you are comfortable doing it. I think 16 is a fine age fro the first time.
GREAT! I know that my son, when he reaches 16, will be able to do this. He has been through airports with me (and will continue to do so), so it will not be a foreign experience for him. This will be a GREAT experience for her. Well done on letter her go to do this.
I traveled abroad alone for the first time at the age of 18 and I have diabetes. That was an adventure! Best wishes to your daughter :-)
Going off to work at a national park for the summer when she was in high school. I had nothing to do with it except say yes when she asked for permission.
Go seek out Narnia in the wardrobe in their bedrooms, still searching.
My mom sent me off on a plane by myself too. 4 connecting flight from Ohio to Chicago, to L.A, to New York, to Arizona, then finally Mexico. 16 long hours, but quite an adventure considering I was alone.
Also, the adventure of cleaning my sister’s room while she’s away at college. There was undiscovered bacterium in there…shudder
