What sort of thing would cause patches of partially-numb skin?

Asked by Nullo (22028points) June 23rd, 2012

Got one just above and left of the left knee, and just found another on my back, below the shoulder and left of the spine. They feel temperature and pain well enough, but pressure doesn’t register until it crosses the pain threshold. They feel a bit prickly if I fuss with them.

I’m not sure what would cause this if you haven’t had any injuries at the sites of any of those numb spots, but I have an extremely similar area of numbness in my left knee that happened as a result of a very hard fall, a contusion (a really big bruise filled with fluid), and some nerve damage. The fall also caused me to feel pain from a certain area in the numb spot in a completely different spot in my knee.

This page gives a list of some things that could cause nerve damage, but also lists some pretty serious and unlikely causes, so I wouldn’t jump to any conclusions.

May be a compressed nerve. I have a numb spot in my left thigh, and it happened after standing for prolonged periods of time during Christmas Eve to cook. Has not gone fully away and gets worse when I stand for periods of time. Because I am heavy set, I assume it is my body weight compressing on a nerve and causing the numbness. I have not gone to the doctor for it, but I can assume that to be the reason.

I had a numb spot on my left thigh for two or three years. It didn’t bother me too much and it went away of its own accord. I don’t know what caused it but I did a lot of cycling at the time and it may have been the pressure of the saddle.

I had a compressed (really, bulging) disk at the base of my neck, which initially caused a massive amount of pain all down my left arm. Years after going through physical therapy to get the disk back in place, I’m still left with partial numbness in my left thumb, first finger, and pinky finger.

After a lumpectomy, I developed partial numbness down the outside of one arm from shoulder to elbow. It was due to the surgeon having to stretch nerve during surgery. It’s now part of the corpus undelicti.

Did some toe-touches and that one where you lift your foot at the ankle, and it went away! Huzzah!
