What is a 'file locker website' ?

I keep hearing this term quite a lot lately. I know what this term means for computer databases (a file is locked when a using is updating it), but what does it mean when describing a website? What do these websites do?

A “file locker website” is a place where people can upload their files – small, large, or even huge – for storage, to keep secure, and/or to share with others.

Examples include: DropBox.com, RapidShare.com, MegaUpload.com, etc.

Of course, there are plenty that are specific to photos: Flickr.com, PhotoBucket.com, FFFFound.com, 500px.com, etc.

Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Apple all offer similar services, often for a fee of some kind (your money, your privacy, other people’s money).

It’s just another aspect of The Cloud.
