Does Unsubscribe go both ways? (Facebook)

Asked by sliceswiththings (11723points) June 27th, 2012

Okay, I used to be a Facebook expert, but this one has me baffled. I have a lot of Facebook friends, and I had hidden/unsubscribed from many over the years. I’ve decided that there’s no point having “friends” that I never knew that well, didn’t talk to much, probably won’t talk to again, and have no facebook relationship with. And so I unhid everybody a few days ago. The plan was that if I saw someone I don’t need to be friends with, I would just unfriend him/her rather than hiding them again. Make sense?

Well, this project is under way, but now many of the people that had been hidden are commenting on my things who didn’t used to. This leads me to believe they just started seeing my posts again. When I unsubscribed, did that remove my posts from their News Feeds as well? If so, it hope it was just a bug before! We should be able to hide people and still be able to show off our things!

No, this isn’t an invitation to express your views on whether or not I should unfriend people. Sorry for being snarky, but irrelevant answers drive me nuts.

Thanks!

Assuming that all you did is unsubscribe from their news feeds, then they were still able to see all of your posts. This sudden resurgence of comments is most likely a coincidence.

I have noticed the exact same thing (people I’ve hidden never comment on anything I do, ever, and they used to) so if it is just a coincidence….it’s a big coincidence…I’m going to unhide everyone and see if there is a resurgance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It can’t be a coincidence. I post allllllll the time, there’s no reason a dozen different people should suddenly start commenting on every post.

Okay, to test it I’m trying to think of someone who may have Unsubscribed from me. Someone who used to comment on my stuff but no longer does. Once I think of that person I can see if I’m still seeing his/her posts! Do it in reverse! Now to think of someone…

I will volunteer my services as a test subject. We can friend each other, and then one unsubscribes from the other, and we’ll see if the other person’s stuff still comes up.

Okay! PM coming your way :)

I anxiously await the results.

@sliceswiththings I tested this before posting, and I’ve just tested it again. It might be that unsubscribing from someone puts you lower on the priority list for appearing in their feed, but it doesn’t keep them from seeing your posts altogether.

Thanks, @SavoirFaire ! I’d accept that. But still annoying!

It seems that @nikipedia can still see me! Maybe it was a bug before that’s been fixed?
