Have you considered buying a pedal power phone charger or DVD player?

You can attach the charger to a bicycle or exercise bike and recharge your phone or Ipod. I saw a pedal power DVD player at Toys R Us for children.

I haven’t seen them but yep, I would buy a pedal powered iphone charger, would make riding the stationary bike feel more productive. Do you have a link
I think they’re pretty cool. There are a few out there now, including this and this.
Reading the specs, how many minutes/hours one has to crank to equal some amounts of charging power, makes one appreciate how much power/work we use casually from our electrical systems.
Why don’t they combine it with a solar charger? I have a flashlight at home that can be recharged with either a crank or solar cell. I keep it on a table next to a window and have never had to use the crank. Nevertheless it is good to know that a minute of cranking provides an hour of light.
A serious rig can get expensive, but could provide power for a broad range of needs in an emergency.
Windstream can sell you the generator and a Black and Decker Electromate to store the power in. There are solar panels that can work with the electromate as well to charge it when you’re not feeling cranky.
