How willing would you be to allow your baby appear in a commercial, TV show, or movie?

Asked by Pied_Pfeffer (28144points) July 11th, 2012

Back in 1993, the film Sommersby was being filmed in a nearby location. There was a cast calling for a baby, and a friend’s young son fit the bill.

Since I wasn’t working at the time, I asked her if she would be interested in having him participate, as long as I was there to supervise. She and her husband passed on the offer, and I respect that.

If it was a safe environment and you could be there, would you be willing to allow your child to participate in something like this? If not, why?

Sure. Why not?

I would have! Especially since my kids were beautiful babies!

Very unwilling.

@Pied_Pfeffer I just don’t think I would want to subject my baby to all the fuss involved in making a TV show, commercial etc. I was in the TV biz for a while and it is really a crazy scene at times that to me would be pretty stressful for a baby is all. Which is why many baby shots are done with twins so they can rotate them out with only short periods in the actual shoot.

I would love it. I grew up around stage performers and I am not the least bit shy.

No. I’m not sure I wouldn’t get dazzled by all attention and what was suppose to be a one time deal may turn out to be a long time job for my kid. Then they may grow up and end up like so many other child actors, on drugs or worse. I think it becomes difficult to control what your child is exposed to in that kind of environment. I loved that my kids had a simple upbringing and so did they. People who genuinely wanted to be around us. I think in the media, its hard to know who your true friends are.

I like to think they would turn out like Ron Howard, @Pandora. ;-)

@bkcunningham Or they could end up like the Olsen twins.

I’m just inquiring about babies who are unlikely to remember the experience. I cannot fathom volunteering my small child to be in a scene that requires having it covered in goo and handled by strangers in a representation of just being delivered, even if they won’t remember it.

OTOH, if the scenes only require short shots of being held or cute poses, I might consider it, as long as the conditions are safe.

Or using your child in a dead child scene. Hmm, @Pied_Pfeffer that makes me rethink my answer. On second thought, my answer wouldn’t be just a broad ‘yes.’

I might let my baby do it, especially if it was just a one time thing. It would be an opportunity to put some money away for college and even if the kid didn’t remember it, they would always have a fun piece of trivia about themselves. As for any more then a one time situation such as the one you describe, I don’t think so. For every Jodie Foster and Ron Howard there are ten Lindsey Lohan’s and Corey Haim’s, I would be too worried because of all the horrible things that happen to so many child stars.

I’d be fine with it, as long as I was able to stay there. Commercial, TV show, movie, modeling ads for magazines and such… I’d probably keep a paranoid eye on my kiddo, but I’d let her do it.
