Can you take a shower at the same time the dishwasher is going?

Asked by YARNLADY (46619points) July 11th, 2012

At my house, we can only get hot water at one appliance at a time, so no one can shower while the clothes washer or dishwasher are running. If someone forgets and turns on the kitchen faucet while someone else is in the shower, they get hit with a bolt of cold water.

No. My water pressure fluctuates when using multiple water sources. If I am watering the yard the washer takes forever to fill, the shower pressure is low and all other water sources run at half capacity. I DO have an amazing 200psi on the faucet on the hill, a regular fire hose that can stand alone when held 4 feet from the hose nozzle.

That’s a drag. We can use the clothes washer, the dishwasher and the shower at the same time.

We can pretty much use everything that uses water all at once. We’ll sometimes have two people showering, a load of laundry going, and the dishwasher running all at the same time. But our upstairs sinks take a very long time to get hot water for whatever reason, with or without other hot water being used, and I usually never have the patience for anything more than lukewarm.

I feel your cold shower pain, as it’s the same at the SO’s house in England. Even turning on the kitchen tap can cause a temperature change in the shower water. Some day, I’ll find out why this is. In the meantime, we’ve learned to give everyone a heads’ up when someone is planning to bathe.

Love my tankless water heater. I can take hour long showers if I want.

I don’t have a dishwasher (unless you count my husband, who’s very good at it) but if I had one, I could still take a shower. Our shower unit draws on only cold water, and heats it up independently inside the unit, so hot water being used anywhere else in the house has no effect on it.

In this old house, no. Even flushing the toilet will steal the cold water from the kitchen sink, and you’ll suddenly be washing your hands in water that is way too hot.

My dishwasher tanks up on hot water before setting off. If I wait about 15–20 minutes after it starts, I can take a reasonably good shower.

We can run pretty much everything at once with no problem.

I can take a shower with every faucet turned in the house. What kills me is the fact that my guest bedroom, with a bathroom connected, features this bastard toilet that has the power to fluctuate all the water temperatures in my PERSONAL FAVORITE BATHROOM, from safe to GET THE HELL OUT.

As for sudden flashes of cold water, it doesn’t happen around here. While they’re just as shocking you should consider yourself lucky it’s not the scalding opposite, that makes you want to find that child, who took that doodie, and throw them.

Most modern showed heads have pressure balance valves that maintain the temperature even if the water preasureis decreased.

I have never experienced this kind of thing, but have heard of it before.

That happened at our old house, but it was the clothes washer (no dishwasher, unfortunately) and also when I was a kid at my parents’ house. Because of that, I never run the washer, dishwasher or shower at the same time wherever I live.
