Who's thinks we should be protesting the smallenization/smallification of our chocolate treats?

Or whatever the stupid word is.
Ok, not that I care, because I don’t eat Hershey’s Kisses, but I noticed that they now have yet another new product which takes away from the amount of chocolate in each individual kiss. Not a stupid almond, or swirl of caramel or (god forbid!) white chocolate. (Bunch of assholes, whose idea was that?)
Now, it’s honest to goodness air. Yep, Air in the shape of little bubbles, which for some unknown reason is supposed to make us happy enough to overlook the fact that there is, by definition LESS CHOCOLATE in the damn things.
It wasn’t enough that they made our peanut butter cups smaller, and our peppermint patties, and our snicker bars. Now those rat bastards are forcibly bending us over the table and letting us have it with no lube and smiling at us all the while, expecting us to say “Mmmm, delicious, thank you!”
I for one have had enough. It’s just that smug, self assured positivity that the American consumer is too lazy and apathetic to take any action other than bitching.
Forget about occupying wall street, I say we converge on the evil chocolate conglomerates and put them under siege. We need to get the sappers and miners to weaken the underpinings and pound the walls with mortars until they collapse. Storm the castles of corporate smugness and re-calibrate all the machines to pre-1960 size.

Try “mini-miniaturization.” And surely you don’t really mean “holocaust cloak”?
It matters little to me. A few years ago, Hershey’moved its manufacturing to Mexico. All that is left in Hershey PA is a token display factory and some corporate offices. This is a typical American corporate trick, smaller amounts of poorer quality product for more money.
Screw them! I wouldn’t eat a piece of Hershey shit if my life depended on it!
For old time’s sake, I recently bought a plastic bottle of Hershey’s syrup (formerly in a can) and was truly disappointed at how shockingly dreadful it tasted. Nothing like my memory.

@Ron_C Hershey’s is beside the point, it was just the last straw. I don’t like their candy either, I always felt like it had wax in it. It’s just yet another blatant diminishment of an already ridiculously small piece of chocolate disguised as “Wooo, a delicious new treat. We’re always thinking how to make your life more delicious, American consuming public.”

You do have to admit, that after corn subsidies and the massive use of corn syrup instead of sugar, the trend has been to OVERSIZE in the last 30–40 years.
I remember the corner market when I was growing up in the 60’s had two displays of candy bars near the register. To the right was the big candy bars and the were a dime and to the left were the little ones for a nickel. On the bottom row were the penny candies that included bazooka bubble gum.
@Trillian I’m with you in spirit. I’d rather, and do eat chocolate bits, just by themselves.
I refuse to buy the smaller candies. Instead, I go to a store called Sugar and they sell a 1 pound Reese’s cup, giant sized Hershey bars, and gigantic boxes of Nerds. I just buy those and they last quite a while.
I thought we were all getting fatter because everything is supersized! Here there are no candy bars that are anywhere near as small as the nickel candy bars I bought as a kid. I wish I could get a smaller candy bar again, then I wouldn’t feel as guilty when I eat one! (I just discovered “Boost.” They handed them out on the Qantas flight. I had never tried one before, they are wonderful! Have you tried one?They are pretty big.)
When I first saw these air kisses I posted a similar rant on facebook. One of my friends who I trust to know chocolate said these bubbly kisses are delicious. I still have never tried one, but now that you remind me of the product again I want to, just to see for myself.
Oh, and white chocolate is not chocolate in my book.
@gailcalled Maybe you were thinking of the chocolate fudge syrup that is still sold in a can?
@gailcalled Actually, I just googled, and maybe it is not offered in a can anymore? I am not sure if this product in the jar is the same as what was in the can? I did see the can not too very long ago. My mom would know. She is an expert on these sort of things. LOL. She is very loyal to Hershey’s.
MAJOR sore spot for me @Trillian. Just like when you open a new box of cereal and it is half full and they get away with it by telling you the contents have settled. Even if you shake the damn thing and fluff it up it is still no where near the top. Then you have “25% more”!! Rip open the bag and it is still half full and instead of 3 chips you get four?? BULL $#it!!
@Cruiser Except, cereal is priced by net weight. Your shouldn’t be looking at the size of the box. Like potato chips, part of the reason there is “air” in the bag is for packaging and shipping reasons.
This thread reminds me of how angry my husband and I used to get when we ate out and encountered bad customer service. We spent a lot of time angry and fat. Once we decided that we wouldn’t eat out except occasionally, and then only fine dining, we got a lot happier and a lot thinner. Maybe the answer is to boycott Hershey’s, and only east small amounts of the finest chocolates. Why waste the calories and the frustration on junk.
@JLeslie I understand that much….it is the blatant efforts at deception with the excessive packaging and or manipulation of the serving sizes I take issue with.
@Judi If you think I’m really “angry” then you completely missed the point. I took a minor irritation and ran with it. Hence the “siege” and “storm the castle” terminology. And I already don’t eat Hershey’s, as I mentioned two separate times. Just havin’ some fun here.
@JLeslie You’re probably not old enough to remember, but Hershey’s syrup in a can is the same product that now comes in a squeeze bottle. They may, however, have changed the recipe. Or the taste of the metal can is what @gailcalled is not tasting.
@Cruiser I know, right? They’re charging us for chip and cereal scented air. I get that they’re selling by weight, but then why make the damn box so big?
@Trillian: The chocolate (or chocolate-like substances) used in candy these days also bears no resemblance to the tastes of my youth. Tootsie Rolls are another example of bizarre new flavoring (and lots of corn syrup).
The cans of yore did not have the white interior lining indicating bisphenol-Al.
I realized you weren’t as affected as my hubby and I were by resteraunts. Ours was a serious problem. This is just a fun rant. Sorry if I sounded judgmental.
@Trillian We used to buy the can. We would heat it up and put it on ice cream. It was fudge syrup, nothing like the squeeze bottle. It was thicker. Or, am I remembering wrong. i can ask my mother if I talk to her tonight.

@JLeslie Ok, I freely admit that I’m not a reliable source. It could very well be my memory which is at fault here. We never used Hershey’s syrup. We would take nestle’s quick in a bowl, mix in some water and make out own syrup. It was delicious and gritty and you could choose your own thickness by the amount of water. It was so good! You can’t duplicate it today because they quick itself is different. :-(
Ok, I called Hershey’s and the syrup can is still available and it is the same as what is in the squeeze bottle, but this guy admitted the fudge topping might have been previously in a can as well, but did not know for sure. Back in the day more things were canned so it is possible. He sounded rather young and there was no information readily available for him to look at old products. So, I have to ask my mom.
But, if @gailcalled remembered buying the syrup years ago that ran freely without being heated, then indeed what she bought probably is the same, or supposed to be the same as what she used to buy.
@JLeslie, I think that the canned syrup in the olden days was made with sugar. I would bet that the stuff they make now is made with corn syrup.
@Judi For sure that is a possibility. True for so many products.
