Computer gurus, can a WordPress site be developed and tested on my local machine before uploading?

I am trying to develop a WordPress site for a prospective client. I am also trying to set up a working development site with my provider, but I am wondering how much I can do to work on it locally as I am trying to learn WordPress at the same time.

Yes, you would just need a local web server to process the PHP and handle the database (mysql).
If you’re on a PC, try WAMP – which I haven’t used, but understand is good.
If you’re on a Mac, try the equally wonderfully named MAMP which I’ve used and it’s great.
Both are common enough that there are a lot of tutorials online and they are updated fairly frequently.
For what it’s worth, I generally develop on my own domain (either within a folder or on a subdomain like client.mydomain.com). That way they can look at a development copy for approval without you putting everything on their server right away.
Good luck.
Absolutely. I can totally walk you through everything. Ask Stella for my AIM handle or email. Or send me a pm for them.
Or I can just set up a blank wordpress install on the STFU Linode that you could play on.
Thank you both very much. John Ryan Powell I most gratefully accept your wonderful offer!! will do.
