Extreme mood swings/moodiness after starting Seasonale birth control?

Asked by Leilaaa (10points) July 18th, 2012

I started taking Seasonale on Sunday and the past few days I have been extremely moody, off and on throughout the day. At times it’s just pure anger for no reason and I just hate everyone. I’m getting mad at people for little things or no reason at all and then it takes me a while to snap out of it. I have chronic depression but I’ve been taking a variety of antidepressants for a long time, so the only thing I can attribute this to is the birth control. Is this normal? Will it go away? Or should I stop taking it?

You should consult your doctor/gynecologist. This doesn’t sound at all normal. Good luck.

Birth control pills can definitely have an effect on your moods. How long it will last is hard to say for sure because everyone reacts a bit differently to the hormones. You should discuss what you are feeling with your doctor and go from there to determine if you should be on a different hormonal birth control.

Uh…what do you think?
Anytime you mess with the natural hormonal rhythems of the body you’re messing with your mind as well.
Is your depression biochemical or just situational?
If you already have brain chemistry issues and now you’re effing with your hormones….well yeah.

Stop….I am 52 and have never used chemical birth control. I have one daughter and used condoms and charting my cycles. Worked for me, only one child in 35 years.
Chemical birth control does not work for every- body.

Hormones of any kind can effect your moods and emotions. Sometimes it’s temporary, sometimes it’s not. I’d definitely call your doctor about it. There are many options for birth control, and it’s likely he/she will be able to find the right one for you. Best of luck!

I was on birth control pills since I was 15. I went to Seasonale at the age of 16.

I always blamed my cyclical depression/suicidal thoughts on heredity until I had a doctor finally pull me off of Seasonale almost 2 years ago. It made a huge difference in my mentality, but there’s a flip side.

Since quitting, I’m symptomatic of perimenopause. I’m far too young for that. There are studies now underway, relating early menopause to users of menstrual-delaying birth control. I can only tell you what I and 2 close friends are experiencing. You don’t want hot-flashes and cold sweats during your prime mating years.

Go with a regular bc pill that allows your cycle or explore other options.

That’s common. It can go away after your body adjusts to the new hormones, but it also might not. (My experience with the Seasonale technique, though not actual Seasonale pills, was horrible; my psychiatrist informed me that Seasonale has had a lot of complaints about causing/exacerbating mental health issues.) Either way, it’s probably worth a call to your doctor to make sure everything’s going ok.

I haven’t tried seasonale, but I was at the doctors office yesterday to get the depo shot and the nurse was telling me about how the shot had turned her into a total bitch while she was on it, (to which I responded “eh, I’m already a bitch anyway, so it’s all good” lol). I was on the birth control patch for several years and it worked really great, I would still be on it if my insurance company covered more of the cost. I was paying $35 a month ($420 a year) for the patch, and the depo shot only cost $20 every 3 months.
