If you had 25 pounds of lead in a plastic bucket in your garage, and you didn't need the lead and didn't want it anymore, what would you do with it?
I can’t just throw it out; into the landfill. I could take it to the hazardous waste disposal drop off but lead seems kind of useful; at least in seems like it might be useful to someone, for something.
I wanted/meant for this Q to be in Social and I don’t know how to fix that. I’ve only been on Fluther for like 3+ years and I haven’t quite figured out how things work around here. If there is a mod around who can push this Q over to Social I would appreciate it.

Put it at the end of your driveway with a sign “FREE bucket of lead”.
You could give it to a civil war reinactor. The make their own lead bullets.
@FutureMemory LOL Either that or make .lead balloons and see how well those go over.
but “Free Lead!” I like that idea.
You can sell lead to scrap yards, some gun shops, and local gun lovers who make their own bullets. Search local wanted sites, or put an ad in Craigslist.
@Mr_Paradox and @ETpro Do these Civil War reenactors and lead bullet people retrieve their lead bullets? I’m not going to give the lead to people who are going to make lead bullets and shoot them and then just leave them there.
My dad was an avid fisherman and he used to make his own lead sinkers. I was able to give my dad’s sinker molds and a fair quantity of the lead to someone I worked with but my parking space was 4 blocks from my workplace and I was only willing to haul so much lead that far. The stuff is pretty damn heavy you know.
So what happens to/with these lead bullets people make? They don’t leave them lying around, do they?
@lillycoyote Hunting down bullets is something of a pain. They’ll keep doing it with or without your lead.
What happens is is that the bullets are usualy fired into a berm. When the berm is replaced the lead is removed and recycled. At least thats what happens at my gun club.
@Nullo… then I am not going to give my lead to those people. Think about it… If I am unwilling to dispose of something as toxic as pure lead in the landfill, it seems that I’m certainly not going to hand it over, give it to people who are going to shoot clumps of pure lead randomly into nature, into the ecosystem, the environment, into the world and just leave it there. Maybe if I could find a gun club like @Mr_Paradox belongs to, I would consider that.
Check with a local art school or gallery. They may know of a source that will either buy it or take it for free to use in sculptures or other art projects.
@lillycoyote Methinks he and I are thinking of the same thing, only he’s better at saying it. :D
@lillycoyote I appreciate your respect for the environment, but lead is mined from the earth to begin with. It’s not commonly found in pure form, but this does occur. Galena is the prettiest alloy, and it’s 86% lead. But seriously, I would guess most shooting ranges recover it from their berms. It’s just too costly to waste, about $1.00 per pound as scrap. And as you noted, it doesn’t take much lead to make a pound.
Erm, it would probably just sit there, getting forgotten. Although I would remember it, if someone came up and said they needed lead for some reason.
@Symbeline You have my back? Just remember, if someone comes up to you and says they need lead, I’ve got it. Just tell them I have a screening process: I need to know where the lead is going to end up. And if they’re O.K. with that, send them my way.
Lead is valuable, sell that stuff. I’m not sure what scrap prices are your part of the world, but here a kilo goes for about 6 euros, meaning you have about 60 bucks of lead there.
Scrap yard is almost certainly the way to go imo.
Due to my state of mind right now, I would hang it over my neck and head for the nearest sea or river! Sorry for not answering the question, but that is how I feel right now, so you can send it over and get rid of it!
An automobile battery manufacturing company would likely pay you a few bucks for the lead.
