Read about Doctors w/o Borders. They accept non-medical volunteers and are looking for folks who can speak some French now. But there seem to be a lot of opportunities. How old are you?
Thanks for the response! I’m 23 with a degree.
I have been reading a lot about the area lately and it has sparked a bit of emotion in me.
Degree in what? Latrines, sanitation, nursing, French, auto mechanics, crop rotation, irrigation planning…book keeping are skills DWB are looking for. Where do you live?
The American Friends Service Committee (run by the estimable Quakers) are a very reputable organization and might have something over there.
Well, my degree is in Design and Photography. I live and work in downtown Chicago. I grew up on a farm, but I don’t think that counts.
Besides the Peace Corps, which offers positions in the technical/computer area, I am not sure how exactly I could use my skills (unless all I do is photograph and become an assistant or help with smaller, day-to-day tasks).
why not work and volunteer somewhere in the states?
To be completely honest, I think you would do more good if you worked a good job here in the United States and then send the extra money to help the Sudanese people.
I know a few people who work at the peace corps and from what I have heard they dont really help much. My uncle served in the UN Peace Corps during the genocide in Rwanda in 1994. Apparently they were not even allowed to shoot at enemy soldiers without permission from higher authorities even when they saw the atrocities happening.
