General Question

Is there anything else?

Asked by emeraldisles (1949points) July 29th, 2012

I haven’t had the opportunity or the money to go for my driving permit til now. No supportive family, no money, no car, anything like that. I said that this summer I would get it. I read the manual. However, I did get money for Driver’s Ed. I am so confused. I know you have the permit for 6 months before you can get the license whatever you age. I turned 18 in March. I am screwed now. They want another adult in the car after you get the permit? I can’t do that. How can I get to school or work then with that? I feel hopeless again. I really feel like screaming. You don’t know how much pain I’ve gone through especially the last 2 years and am not even sure I can go to community college now because there’s no help at all for my family. My dad the cross dresser, keeps flip flopping on me and I can’t trust a thing he says.My family or lack there of can’t help me because they have absolutely no money or work. If it sounds like I’m ungreatful, well that’s not the truth.

If you have paid for a Driver’s Ed course, ask the instructor about the fine tuning that has you confused. You can drive when he is in the car, of course.

Have you no friends or acquaintances or mentors at school or work who will help you out?

You don’t need cash in your pockets to sit in the passenger seat of a car while someone is learning how to drive.

Can you find something you do well to use in a barter exchange. For example, I will help you with driver lessons and you can mow my lawn, paint my house, wash my windows, etc.

If you are completely isolated, you might want to work on that.

I expect that at your current age you can obtain an unrestricted license as soon as you can pass the written test and the practical (driving) test with a DMV inspector, assuming you qualify in all other ways, such as eyesight and physical capability. In most of the US jurisdictions of which I have any knowledge, a Driver’s Ed class is not an actual requirement, but successful completion should get you a discount on your insurance, when it’s time to purchase that (generally when you have a car of your own, or because someone else’s rates will rise somewhat if you share the car with them).

What state are you in? Not all states have the same laws, of course. If we know the state a particularly helpful jelly can probably google the exact state laws for your area and quote you the exact regulations.

Massachusetts and I only have 2 friends. They can’t help me. Some people are really alone in the world. My family is old and has their own problems.

I know that in my state they used to let people over the age of 16 without a license skip straight to getting their license. (I say used to because the Mississippi driving laws changed last year and i’m not sure if that law was edited) They still had to take the written test that people getting their permits take, but they didn’t have to have another adult in the car when driving and they got a legitimate license card. I would suggest you going up to the DMV and explaining that you’re 18,responsible, and just plain busy so you need your lisence. (DMV workers aren’t known for their kindness though..) if they don’t listen, you can at least get your permit and 6 months later you can get your lisence

I thought I was going to get a job, but then they see I can’t drive…Its not like I can afford a car. I’ll be taking the bus or a taxi.

Yeah it makes sense but consider the fact of someone who is emancipated or who waits to get their permit. Stuff happens and it gets pushed to the back burner.

I have confidence. I’ll try and suck up.

You’ve obviously had a hard time in life, but you’ve made it 18 years and things can only get better. Having to wait six months to get your license would be quite a hassle, but whats six more months when you’ve been waiting 18 years to be completely independent? It’ll work out somehow x

Since you are 18 years old, the Junior Operator License Restrictions (see page 7 which apply to operators under 18 years of age) do not apply to you. Talk to someone at the RMV about whether or not you can apply for the Learner’s Permit (required for all new license applications) and take the road test on the same day. I believe it should be possible. If you’ve already taken Driver Ed and done well on that, and if you’re up on the rules of the road and the general information in the Manual (they don’t ask trick questions, but they do ask questions with a certain amount of specificity required in the answers, and you do have to get a passing grade – at least 18 of 25 questions answered correctly and within a 25-minute test period), then it should only be a matter of “how soon after the Learner’s Permit issue can I schedule the road test and license application?” Any RMV information agent should be able to tell you that.

Yeah I’m not in college and don’t have a job and live at home. I know certain people love me but they can’t help me.I’m very, very different. Well this accelerated class is supposed to start tomorrow, and I’ll ask. Some people also don’t go through driver’s ed and just apply for the permit and go through the waiting period with practice time.
