Thanks @Linda_Owl but it is more classic art, the sort you might see in national art galleries I was looking for. There are probably copyright reasons why this is not very readily available.

Unfortunately classic art is not like classic literature; it doesn’t become “public domain” at a certain age, so copyright to the images is usually retained by the gallery that owns the original painting. You will therefore find very few legitimate websites containing collections of classic art.

If you know which piece in particular you are looking for, a Google search may tell you which gallery owns it, and the website for that particular gallery might have the images you require.

Well, @flutherother , I had a personal reason for recommending www.originalartonline.com .
I am an artist & I have an on-line gallery at originalartonline. The various artists (who also have on-line galleries at originalartonline) have some great paintings available, maybe even some that might measure up to what you are looking for.

There is a database called Artstor with lots of classic art. I access it through our university library, you could check with local university or public libraries to see if they subscribe.

Yes, @flutherother , I have a gorgeous green Dragon with blue wings, called ‘Darkness Wakes’ & another fantasy painting called ‘Whistle for the Unicorn’ ( + several other paintings).

Deviantart.com is a good website for posting art and seeing other people art… I don’t know any others sorry
