What is the smallest denomination of money you will stoop to pick up, if found on the ground (presumably a clean piece of ground)?

Asked by jca (36062points) August 1st, 2012

Will you stoop to pick up a penny? A nickel? A dime? Nothing less than a quarter? No coin at all?

A nickel.

Depends on the day. Some days I just can’t be bothered to pick up a penny… (work days) .. other days (weekends) I may pick up pennies.. especially to see if they are heads up or not.

A penny – I am cheap. I don’t care if it is heads or tails either.

A penny. If it takes me one second to pick it up, I just paid myself $36 per hour, tax free! And I got some exercise.

A penny. I’m a cheapskate.

Penny. We keep a large coin bank. Once it fills, we use the dough to purchase local zoo/museum memberships. Every little bit helps!

Oh, and ironicly….... I’m half Jewish.

A penny.

A one cedi coin. At the time about 5000 cedi made a US Dollar. But I like to collect coins from around the world.

A penny is the lowest denomination in British currency and if I see a penny on the ground, hell yeah I’m going to pick it up. I need that luck!

Anything. I have change saved up and it’s a cool game I play to see how much I can get over time. I’ve saved up 30 dollars in change once.

On a related note: Last week I found a 20 on the ground, and a few days after that I found a dollar. The dollar was wet from rain, but I dried it out. Yeah, I did that.

@Blackberry Last time I turned in my loose change, I got $218.63 back from the bank. And I broke their change counter.

I nearly always pick up any thing interesting I see, including pretty rocks, pennies, and other things that catch my attention.

Shh. Don’t tell my SO, but I pick up change off of the ground. He doesn’t like the thought of things on the germy pavement.

It doesn’t matter what the denomination the coin is. And it really has nothing to do with saving it up. It stems from having a father who, for a variety of reasons, always encouraged his children to do so. One disclaimer: if found in a store, I turn it in to the clerk. They always need change.

If the penny is icky, I won’t pick it up. If it isn’t, I will. Assuming every coin I see is icky, I’ll still pick it up if it’s a dime or more. (We save up our change, too.)

Pound coin.

It’s more about convenience than denomination for me. I’ll pick up a penny in my path, but it’s going to have to be a quarter or better for me to deviate more than a few steps off course.

I constantly toss small change to the ground, maybe some kid will find & claim the bounty…..littering with benefits I like to call it.

I will also pick up a rusted screw so it doesn’t get caught in someone’s tires.

anartist's avatar

a penny. I tell myself it’s for luck. But there was a time I was almost too depressed to pick up a $20 bill I saw lying under a cigarette machine. Common sense got the better of me, though.

josie's avatar

A penny. See @LuckyGuy Picking up an orphan penny is an enormous return on investment.

A nickel because of the thickness of it. I can’t seem to get a penny or a dime off the ground. And the piece of ground’s cleanliness never has figured in to it.

I will always stop for a penny or any size coin when I’m out jogging. It is a game with me. I see how much money that I can find per year. I’ve seen pennies stuck in street tar and took the extra effort to dislodge them and later clean the residual tar off with solvent. The most that I’ve found was 2 twenty dollar bills. I’m always scanning the ground for money when I’m out and about. One time I even spotted a one dollar bill while jogging at night with no street lights. When I find money on the floor of stores I either hand it over to the clerk or let it be.

My husband has trained me that no denomination is too small so I pick up everything from pennies on up.

A penny, especially if it’s shiny. If it’s shiny, I give “my” lucky penny to the first old (over 75) person I see. They remember magic.

A penny. For luck.

A penny saved is a penny earned. Benjamin Franklin

A penny if it’s a 1909S VDB; 1914D; copper (bronze?) 1942, 1943, or 1944; or a 1956 double D. Those coins are worth hundreds-thousands of dollars if they’re in decent condition.

Otherwise, a dollar bill or more.

Penny for luck.

@YARNLADY I pick up things that catch my eye too. My favourite thing to find (apart from money) are old keys. I have a box of stuff that I have found and there are a few old keys in there, one is quite old fashioned looking and I often wonder what kind of door it was once used for. I like to think it was the key for the wardrobe entrance to Narnia!!!

Quarter – I’m a high roller like that.

A nickel.

I throw pennies away, sometimes.

I’ll pick up a penny, it’s supposed to be good luck. I keep a large jar that I fill with pennies; it holds around £25-worth of them, and I get them changed for notes when it’s full.

JenniferP's avatar

I always pick up pennies and I don’t care who is around to see it.

If I saw a $100 on the ground, I’d pick it up and I wouldn’t care HOW dirty the ground was!
