Long term users of Fluther, are you content with the new users?

Asked by Imadethisupwithnoforethought (14682points) August 7th, 2012

I have been using fluther for over a year. I have noticed a sinificant shift in user base.

If you are a long term user, how does this make you feel? Do the new users appreciate the culture you hope to find or do they make you uncomfortable?

I haven’t noticed a problem. Usually they quickly catch on to the culture of the site and fit in, or they wind up not staying.

ETpro's avatar

I likes new users. They taste better… Erm, I mean they have great taste.

YARNLADY's avatar

If we didn’t have new users, the site would die out. My only complaint is they ask duplicate questions a lot.

rooeytoo's avatar

I like some of the new users better than some of the old users.

That’s life!!!

TexasDude's avatar

There are new users?

woodcutter's avatar

What is it they are supposed to be doing to satisfy me?

iphigeneia's avatar

No, they have more lurve than I do.

But I really like that they’re here. I would hate to make my occasional visit and find it a ghost town.

I was once a new user so I try to extend a lot of grace. Unless their spamming, then I flag the crap out of them and politely tell them that they won’t be very popular around here doing that.

augustlan's avatar

There are always new members, and it’s a darn good thing, too. Some will appreciate the culture here, and some won’t. Those who don’t will either grow to appreciate it (or at least play by the rules) or they’ll find somewhere else they like better and move on. As it ever was, as it ever will be. Amen. ;)

I love new users. Those that come and want to be part of the site bring with them new perspectives and energy.

To be honest, I would hate one of them to read this and feel there is a ‘them and us’ attitude here. I know that isn’t your intention @Imadethisupwithnoforethought but I remember when I joined Fluther and seeing questions/posts about how wonderful it used to be and how great long gone members were. It made me feel like an outsider.

Since then we have had great people join and I value them and the wonderful long term members we have. I hope the new people feel welcome and like part of the community. I think we have some fabulous new members and thank goodness for that.

FutureMemory's avatar

Meh. There seems to be a lot of new people posting, but the quantity of quality questions hasn’t increased.

DigitalBlue's avatar

I really haven’t noticed many new users, not counting those that come and ask a question or two and then disappear.

mangeons's avatar

I love having new users. How boring would it be if we never got new people? They either catch up to the standards pretty quickly, or they don’t end up staying for long. Either way, I’m grateful for whenever we get new users. Keeps things exciting!

OpryLeigh's avatar

I miss some of the old users that were veterans when I joined over three years ago. owever, I love it when someone new comes along and proves to be really interesting. I always hope they stick around. I think you can always tell the ones that are going to stick around and become a valued jelly or the ones that will ask a few mediocre questions, never personalise their avatar and then disappear.

They literally could not suck anymore.

You said that you noticed a “significant shift” in the userbase.

Could you elaborate on exactly what this shift that you’ve noticed is? I’m trying to figure out the premise of your Q in order to answer it, so…

ucme's avatar

I don’t keep track of new users, not unless they grab my attention, by which time they’re probably well bedded-in & clearly defined as either likeable, forgettable or just plain yuk!

augustlan's avatar

See, @bookish1 is a fantastic new-ish member!

I always hope that a new user will not try to become a people pleaser on here, and be vocal and strong about their own beliefs, and tell others off when they need to be told. Alternative opinions, along with the ability to debate them is what makes a site good. Echo chambers and people pleasing (I’m not talking about disrespecting others here) are never good things in my opinion.

Maybe I would be considered a newer user on here, but it was my intention to give some things related to the paranormal, theism and some potential alternative treatments at least some say. Conservativism and religion get some representation on here, unlike the topics that I try to concentrate on. There are many people who can debate some of my issues much better than I, but they typically don’t get involved with Q & A sites like this.

I’m not sure if the userbase has changed that much, though certain users have left, to only be replaced by others with similar stances on most topics anyways.

Imadethisupwithnoforethought's avatar

@Buttonstc I am not knocking the new users, or feel they have changed the culture at all. I have just noticed that people I chit chatted with a year ago or so in many cases have left, and I am chit chatting with people who are relatively new.

Just trying to get a sense of how users who have been on Fluther for a much longer stretch of time than I feel about the way the site is evolving.

Berserker's avatar

I am. They don’t all stay, but some do, and it kicks ass. Like my main squeeze @bookish1 who says funny ass shit!

I don’t pay attention.

hug_of_war's avatar

Not really. I think it’s good to get new blood, not just because the site would die otherwise, but because when you know what basically everyone in a thread will say about a topic it really becomes uninteresting to me.

janedelila's avatar

@Keep_on_running What a perfectly sucky thing to say. I disagree.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

You guys probably thought I was a cretin when I first showed up on here. Give em a chance, most peeps figure it out.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

You all don’t have to agree I was a cretin. :)

Keep_on_running's avatar

@janedelila I should probably stop being so sarcastic.

Bellatrix's avatar

Takes @Adirondackwannabe‘s shovel away. Enough digging a hole.

ETpro's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe I never thought that. Does that mean I’m an even bigger cretin? :-)

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

You guys are cold. :) You’ll scare the newbies. Especially you @DigitalBlue It’s a good thing I like you.:)

I was very active when I joined >5 years ago, but never got into the chat rooms and such, so I have not ‘bonded’ with too many jellies. Many times we’d have an influx of new users when another Q&A site closed, and I saw some drama that surrounded it. I have been far less active in the past 3 years, and so there are as many unfamiliar names as familiar to me. I’ve no concept how many incarnations of Zen there are or have been, as well as other users who have left and returned or simply changed their names.

As with all the social sites I’ve been on, I’ve learned that people come and go – including myself – and quality of content fluctuates greatly, so I don’t tend to get very attached anymore. I’ve learned to take things at face value and not expect anything of anyone—in person or online.

DeanV's avatar

Well, I’ve been here 4 years, and although I miss a lot of the older users and the different tone of the site back in the day, I suppose the new crowd hasn’t been too terrible to the site. I cringe at more questions and answers than I used to, and I feel like there’s a few more answers nowadays that are just blatantly wrong, but I have a feeling that’s a result of my own growth and knowledge as well, perhaps aided along by a few rose-tinged ideas of the past.

At least there’s less complaining about the mods, I guess.

Haleth's avatar

Holy crap, I’ve been on here since 2009. Time flies!

rooeytoo's avatar

@Haleth – you made me curious, so I had to check. I have been here since 2008! Hard to believe.

I’m on 4+ years here in the lagoon, but I too was a newbie, a greenie, a polliwog. And so it goes, so it goes. I do find that the new folks that “get” Fluther out of the gate, are like people you’ve known your whole life. They just blend right in. Bring ‘em on, I say. By bus or by boat, in droves or in dribbles. Fill this here lagoon to brimming and from it will burst forth the most glorious of questions and most delicious of answers. Swim on young jellies. Swim on.
