Based on Super Bowl wins, you have to go with Montana (Bradshaw got the job done with great support and exceptional defense, but was not an excellent quarterback). Take away the Super Bowl wins, the guy with the best arm and stats to match is Dan Marino. Also-rans: Elway, Favre, Young, Tarkenton.

Michael Vick.

Bret favre. No question. If you look at the teams they all had to work with compared to his I believe he was the most talented of them all including marino. And you wont hear sour grapes when others break his records later in life. What that guy did was unbelievable.

Its based on the criteria one uses to define great. Marino has the stats and Montana the Super Bowls (as previously mentioned), but my favorite and the guy I would want on my team would in fact be Brett Favre. And I’ll add that he was my guy in a fantasy football league and got me a first and second place trophy plus cash.

I don’t understand how marino has the stats. What stats. are we talking about?

Bri_L's avatar

meaning what stats does he have vs Favre that make him the better QB. I ask to be informed. I know Favre has a hell of a lot of records.

From NFL:
Marino: comp. 4,967 of 8,358 pass atts for 61,361 yds, 420 TDs, 252 int.
Favre: comp. 5,021 of 8,223 pass atts for 57,500 yds, 414 TDs, 273 int.

I don’t think you can go by pure stats alone, that is were I think we get into gray area like how long they played and with whom. You would really have to compare the offenses and supporting player stats as well. He came close to the numbers you listed with out one year of play that Marino had.

He also had these records:
# Most AP NFL MVP awards: 3 (1995, 1996, 1997)[65]
# Most consecutive starts by a quarterback (NFL): 253,
which marino never came close to touching.

Agreed! Like I said, Favre is my guy…he brought me trophies and cash and I enjoyed many exciting games.

heheh Boy even when they lost they were exciting weren’t they? I grew up in green bay/Appleton Wisconsin. My godfather helped build the stadium. He has Vince Lombardi’s shoes from when he was a player. I used to trick or treat at Bart star’s house (gave out chocolate footballs). Packer fan from the day I was born. My aunt polly gave back…let me type that again…gave back 4 season tickets instead of giving them to the family because she didn’t want them. The ones that there is a 70,000 name waiting list for. It will be weired but exciting watching the Pack without Favre. I have managed to forget all the ‘80s quarterbacks.

My partner says “Without a doubt, Joe Montana”. Four super bowl titles and three MVPs.

wow I was one off on both of those stats. I thought it was 3 and 2. He was a totally cool guy to always giving credit to his teammates and such. great role model.
