Are you afraid of the dark?
And why? Were you afraid of the dark when you were a child as well?
When I was little, I used to sleep with the light on. Now, I usually don’t mind the dark (I actually like it when there’s no light at all, sometimes) but there are also times when I’m so afraid I have to turn the light on again. When that happens, I can’t sleep.
What about you?

Not at all. I find darkness to be comforting and relaxing. Unfortunately there is a streetlight right outside my house so my bedroom is never dark. Sometimes I feel like taking a shotgun to it.
I used to be afraid of the dark, not going to lie. but thats because as a child I had a vivid imagination.
Not even a little. Even as a kid the dark didn’t bother me, in fact things like night lights, hall lights, street lights precluded sleep much more often. But, the monsters that lived and lurked just out of sight in my bedroom only to come out just as you were about to fall asleep, they were terrifying, insomnia inducing, horrors!
Nah, I sleep in the dark, I fuck in the dark & I watch movies at the cinema in the dark…..what’s to be afraid of?
The dark has never bothered me when it comes to going to bed or sleeping, even as a child.
@this_velvet_glove So what is causing this fear that requires a light be turned on sometimes?
Much like @downtide I find darkness to be relaxing. The only condition that I apply is that I have to be inside. I don’t really like the dark unless I’m within a building. It also helps to have people that I know with me.
Someone told me “The same stuff is there in the light as in the dark” when I was little. Took care of it for me.
@Adirondackwannabe Yeah. Don’t be afraid of the dark, be afraid of what’s in the dark. lol
And not me, I love the dark.
I don’t mean to aggravate people’s fears or anything but maybe its the things that come crawling out of their dank dark holes in the dead of night that makes it scary!
Bevare! Bevare! For tonight it will be Dark!
Total darkness when I’m sleeping? Forget it. With the kind of imagination I have, I’d torture myself to death thinking about all the nasty evil spirits hovering above me. Now, if it was a salacious, lascivious and lecherous spirit of a female who is trapped here in this dimension because she wants stimulation, well then…bring on the Dark!
Yep. Probably exacerbated by my below-average level of night vision. Even a movie theatre after the movie has started is too dark for me to see the stairs.
I used to be when I was little, but I love it now. Then again, I was afraid of pretty much everything as a child.
Not so much. It depends on whether there are likely to be things in the dark that could harm me. Mostly, there aren’t.
I haven’t been afraid of the dark since I was a child. I used to be very afraid to put my feet on the floor at night because I thought something would grab them from under my bed.
The only time that the dark freaks me out is when I have to venture down in my damp, dark (old ) basement. It’s black as can be when you open the door (whilst at the top of the stairs) and I quickly feel around for the light switch to turn it on!!!! I’m pretty sure that an ax murder hangs out down there.
I’ve always loved the dark. There’s something comforting about it to me.
No, but complete darkness is hard to come by if you live in a city. It isn’t really dark until I close my eyes.
@Pied_Pfeffer Mostly my imagination, I guess. I think there’s someone watching me, and if I start thinking about it, it only gets worse. And I end up either sleeping on the couch or just staying up.
My house sets out in the middle of nowhere. If it’s cloudy I get complete darkness. It’s really kind of cool.
Fear it? Ha! I’m the monster that rustles from under your bed, the boogeyman that creaks open your closet door, the Slenderman that flits into sight and disappears just as suddenly when the shadows dance upon your walls. I am the dark.
I can relate to @YARNLADY‘s childhood fear that there was something under the bed but no, I am not scared of the dark. If I was wandering around in a secluded area in the dark I would be more vigilant and aware of my surroundings, noises etc. but other than that I like the dark.
As a child, I was afraid of dark. But when I was sad and wanted to be left alone, I used to hide in dark places so that no one would find me.
Hmm. . . usually darkness (combined with quiet) comforts me from frustration.
However, occasionally I wake up terrified, cower under my blanket for a while, then race to the light switch, heart thumping and quickly search my room for whichever horror appeared in my dream.
