Can anyone give me advice on which Ukulele I should buy?

Asked by AshLeigh (16340points) August 14th, 2012

So, I want to learn how to play the Ukulele. I’m going to order one online soon, but I don’t know a lot about them, so I could use some help picking one out.
What should I be looking for?
Also, if you could suggest a good tuner, that would be cool too. :)

Pay between $150 and $250 for a soprano Uke. Good beginner uke include Fluke by Fleamarket Music Store and Lanikai make good instruments. Lanikai also makes a clip-on tuner for under $30. Avoid “tourist” ukes for under $75.

Look up Ukulele Underground on the web, Aldrine Guerrero is good at teaching and playing Ukulele (he lives in Kauai Hawaii ).

How much do you want to spend? I would recommend a tenor uke if you can afford it, or a concert uke if you can’t. Sopranos are a bit too small for my tastes.

I wouldn’t spend any less than $100. And at this price, Chinese made ukes keep their tuning, but their tone is pretty klinky. If you want a uke that has good tone, you’re going to be running several hundred dollars.

I gave my son a set from Luna Guitars for his birthday back in June that included a medium size ukulele, pitch pipe, and case. It ran about $100.

You can get tuning apps for your phone, there is one for an iPhone that includes a metronome. The app will listen to your string, play a tone and tell you to tighten or loosen and indicate how much.

Ive got a Les Paul Epiphone Electric red sunburst Uke. And I love it only cost me like 100$ which was good.

I don’t really have a price range. I’m willing to pay a lot.
I like the Soprano sized ones. That’s the only kind I’ve ever played.

Whichever brand you want to buy, make sure is was not made in China or similar places, only in Europe, America, or similar places. I have two clarinets, one from China and one from Germany. The German one beats the Chinese one by a lot in terms of tone quality.

Ok well if price isn’t an issue and you want a soprano there are a lot of options. I agree about the Chinese made ukuleles. They keep their tuning but they sound cheap.

When I get to a computer I’ll post some links.

A sidenote on a professional ukelele workshop I read about recently was recommending Fluke, Flea, and Firefly from these folks.

Here are some decent soprano ukes for reasonable prices. This is just my local music store, but you can find them all over the place.
