[NSFW] A question for females regards Premarin?

Asked by Shippy (10020points) August 16th, 2012

I got a tube of Premarin from my pharmacist, mostly because I have some dryness and pain on intercourse. My goal was to use it on the vulva area only but I see it comes with a vaginal dispenser. The stroke and heart negative side effects have kind of put me off using it. OK the question

Can I use it just as a rub on cream in that area?

I am turning 50 so presume at this stage I am peri menopausal?

Would it help with a slight tear I have there? As this was also the reason I purchased it.

Premarin is an estrogen cream. Any feedback will be appreciated

I am personally very opposed to the use of premarin. Here is a video that explains why.

There is another cream that is plant based and not horse urine based that might be safer. I’m sure you could just use it as a cream. I don’t know if it will help the tear heal faster or not.

Shippy's avatar

@judi. Thanks can you tell me what it is called?

Coloma's avatar

I agree with @marinelife Please consider alternative therapies of which there are many.
I have a PMU rescue horse next door, a gorgeous Belgian draft horse and he came from a Premarin farm in Canada. Premarin is one of the most cruelty based “medical” industries to ever exist. Please reconsider this choice.

@marinelife. Thanks but I’m on mobile so can’t download the video sadly. But not sounding good so far

Shippy's avatar

@coloma. That too not sounding great. The package insert was miles long and I don’t concentrate well but yes saw mare urine mentioned. So this is a cruel process then? NOT good.

If anyone knows of any plant based or similar please let me know.

I used an estrogen cream, Estrace, just on my vulva for a short time and my boobs ached. I told the doctor and she said it could not be from the cream, because so little is absorbed. I had stopped using it and the discomfort had gone away, but the doctor kind of beat me up for not giving it a chance and that it could not be the Estrace causing my symptoms, so I tried it again and the breast discomfort returned. Then I told a friend who had used the same cream, and she said she had the same symptoms. Never used it again.

My problem is probably different than yours, but I have problems with my vulva tissue “cracking.” I get 1–2 inch long vertical cuts on my vulva, like a straight paper cut, and it does bleed a little. It also heals quickly usually, within a few days. I sometimes put A&D ointment on it. My problem is infectious related, if I take antibiotics all my dryness problems dissappear and my discharge returns to normal. Long story I won’t bore you with, but all my cultures are completely normal. When I tried the estrace my hormones were perfect, so the extra estrogen really affected me I guess.

@Shippy , I need to make an appointment with my NP who does bio identicals. I will find out the name as I need it too.

@Shippy Here is an article on it.

@JLeslie . Mine is a little different but also slightly similar. For ages like years I was sexually inactive. Recently becoming very active. I was aware there was a sore area on my vulva but didn’t look at it. Wish I had.

One time after sexual contact I realised it was more painful then did look. It looked to me like a popped blister. Bit red and blackish. Then it turned grey. I went for STD testing even though I knew there was no need but was confused. Came back clear. So finally had pap smear also clear. So at this point I’m treating as an injury that won’t heal. Tried all sorts olive oil etc. Doctor saw it was not overly concerned.

@shippy Did they test it for Herpes? It could have been a simple pimple. How long has it been there?

The problems started after you started having sex again? Or, you were already having discomfort, but didn’t pay close attention until you started having sex again?

Shippy's avatar

@JLeslie. Not herpes no. But all the others. There is only one no others. No red areas or anything like that. Nor any other area affected. It definitely started when I became active not before. It could have been a pimple. It also could have been a razer knick as I shave inner area too. If that makes sense. It is situated on the opening so its position suggests its friction?

Shippy's avatar

@judi. Thanks. I think one is called Soy cream.

Judi's avatar

There is a prescription alternative, but it has to be made in a compounding pharmacy. I just cqan’t remember the name.

@Shippy Yes, it is a horrible “existence” for a mare. She is kept continuallt pregnant, ( gestation for horses is 11 months ) to collect the hormones secreted in her urine. The foals are often taken at birth, or shortly after they are weaned and sold for meat or to other auction/slaughter houses, or, a few fillies are kept for the manufacturing of more Premarin.
These horses are kept stalled and standing for months on end while their urine is collected.

Admittedly I am biased as a lifelong horse lover/owner/rider, but there are many synthetic substitutes that will work just as well and you will not be haunted by the cruelty of participating in abusive animal farming.

Blister is herpes. Not that you definitely have herpes, it could be like you said from friction or a pimple, or some ther reaspn. But, the other STD’s would not cause that problem most likely, I think the doctor just did the routine testing for STD’s because you had become sexually active again. there are some rare STD’s that I am sure you were not tested for, that can cause ulcers this like that, but I don’t think you have to worry about those. They are very rare found in third world countries things like that.

If you get another “blister” I think you should go immediately for a herpes culture. The culture is very innacurate after days have past.

Ok, but let’s assume it isn’t any sort of STD. The suggestion I have is to rinse the area well when you urinate. Not because I think you need to rinse the urine, but to keep the area free of vaginal discharge. A bottle with a straight stream of water that rinses the area is easiest to use. Take a bath in the evening and morning, can be just a quick dunk of your vulva in shallow water for a couple of minutes. You can also try using tampons to keep discharge off the area. Just do it for 4–7 days and see if there is improvement. If there is, in my opinion it is not a dryness problem, but something with the discharge.

Ointments will help protect and hydrate the area, but also can clog pores and cause pimples possibly. However, sometimes ointments do help my vulva heal, and protect from discharge. Also, areas that have been inflammed, using OTC cortizone cream or oitnment has been very helpful.

I am not a doctor, just a girl with shitty luck since my 20’s battling this crap. Again, I have no real idea how similar your problem is to mine, but the water rinsing has no downside, I think it can provide a lot of information, and at least for me I know wihtin days its working.

Shippy's avatar

@JLeslie. Ok will do. I am willing to try anything for it to go. Thanks so much for all your help. By the way I am in a 3rd world country. The cortizone is also a good idea.

Shippy's avatar

@Coloma. I hear you sounds awful and no won’t be purchasing this again for that and a whole host of reasons. Thanks again.

@Shippy I use emerita ‘progest’ – it comes in pre-measured packettes you rub it into the area or your inner arm, it helps. I have breast cancer in my family and have to stay away from soy products and bio-identicals. (it is an estrogen active cancer). Because I don’t have insurance and am a big fat self-treater anyway I also ordered Armour thyroid on the internet and that helps too. probably don’t do this one unless you have some blood tests at the lab and do a whole lot of research anyway, hope this was helpful and not too meandering, good luck friend. Ps the emerita progest is made from wild yams.

JLeslie's avatar

@trailsillustrated You order Amour without a script?

trailsillustrated's avatar

@JLeslie yes I do and other things that I need. (not ‘pain killers) it’s easy
