No, even tho I’m long overdue for an upgrade. But I will get the iPhone 4S and enjoy the heck out of that for several years. (I’m still using my 3G which is still in pristine condition)
I’ve read that the 5 will have a much smaller connector from the one which has been standard on all iPods and iPhones for years now.
I’d much rather wait and not have to pay top price for an adapter which will allow me to use all of my various speakers, docking stations, battery chargers, etc. with the old standard connector.
By the time I get the 5 a few years down the road, these will all be available at fire sale prices and with a lot more options and choices. And the same goes for cases.
I have top of the line high quality name brand cases for both my 3G and soon to be 4S which originally cost $25–35 and I usually got for $5 or less (the Ed Hardy tiger was $10 but so worth it for a kickass design originally costing $35 or more)
As someone above mentioned, there are distinct financial and other advantages to not always getting the latest and greatest the first moment it’s available. And no waiting on long lines.
What you’re really paying through the nose for is “the latest” part of that phrase. 2–3 years later it’s still as GREAT as when it was first released, but so much more affordable.
And the name brand cases better protect your phone from damage and are so much better made than the bargain basement knockoffs; but to me, it’s insane to pay $35 for an iPhone case when it will be available a few years later for $5 or less. And also the reviews, based upon user experience, will be much more accurate than the initial brief impressions when they first appeared on the market. You can avoid any with obvious design flaws.
So, I’ll soon be stopping by the Apple store to get my new iPhone 4S. I’ve already picked up a few high quality cases for far cheaper than they were initially.
