How do I connect my TV and PC using an HDMI cable?

Asked by nikipedia (28095points) August 19th, 2012

I am trying to connect my TV to my boyfriend’s PC. He is out of town, the cable box has spontaneously stopped working, and because it is approximately a hundred thousand degrees I have a fan blowing so loudly I can’t hear TV on my computer.

He has done it before many times, so presumably all the necessary pieces are here somewhere.

The PC has two monitors which are both plugged into the computer.

I don’t see anything that looks like it will fit the HDMI cable. Should I be looking on the computer, or the back of one of the monitors?

Is there a special trick I’m not thinking of?

Maybe he used the cable that goes from the PC to one of its monitors to hook up from the PC to the TV instead ? Are the monitors HDMI ? The TV has HDMI inputs?

I don’t know if the monitors are HDMI. The HDMI cable is connected to the TV already. Based on the height at which I usually trip over the cord when they’re hooked up, I think I need to connect that cable to one of the monitors, but I don’t see anything that looks like it would fit.

Look on the back of the computer.

The plug for HDMI should be on the computer and not the monitors.

Make sure your computer’s GPU has a HDMI plug. Otherwise you’ll need a HDMI to DVI converter.

Both my video card and my TV have HDMI plugs, making it simple for me to use my 32” TV as a monitor. Just one cable between the two, and I am in business; no other hardware required.

Some video cards only have VGA plugs, and not all TVs have HDMI inputs while some (like mine) have both HDMI and VGA. That is where it gets tricky.
