It very much depends on the music. A lot of songs would be very boring without the vocals, they add meaning and is another way for the artist to convery what they’re feeling. However, if the instrumental music is good enough and you can hear emotions etc in the music then why would you bother with vocals?

I personally enjoy words in music. I think it gives the music more meaning. Not to take away music without words. All in all music is art. Its poetry. And I think most people have connections with songs that describe them. I enjoy Jack Johnson. His music is very basic, common cords, however, his words brings his music to a new level

haha, see, and i realy don’t like jack johnson that much because it’s too basic, i can’t realy enjoy the lyrics, but right now im listening to liquid tension experiment, and totally digging that, i think it realy depends on the artists, because to me the instruments provide the vocals, the phrasing is so emotional and clean, yeah, i guess that’s just it, if the musician is good enough, there’s no need for vocals, haha

I love Liquid Tension Experiment.

I think that while the instrumental is extremely important to the overall music experience, I like a lot of the songs I like because of the lyrics and what they say

One of my favorite ( if not my favorite) bands is chiodos. the singer doesnt have that good of a voice but i like the words, and i also like the music a lot. so i would say that vocals arent a turn off for me as long as the accompanying music is good and the words are cool

Depends on the genre of music. I am completely fine with no vocals though. Nothing like a good techno song being ruined by some crappy lyrics.

@uberbatman, there is no such thing as a ‘good techno song’

see this

@waterskier2007 techno is awesome

Im not sure if your saying theres no good techno as a joke so you can post the xkcd comic or you really believe it, but if its the latter go try and make some techno, youll soon realize how hard it is and i also think thats one of the things that make techno so cool, they are taking a few samples and making an entire song out of it.

waterskier2007's avatar

yeah i realize its pretty tough to make, but in my opinion all music is hard to make. and i think techno is so repetetive and to me its just obnoxious. i dont listen to music just because of how hard it is to make, i listen based on if i like the music

El_Cadejo's avatar

Again though, not all techno is repetitive, no more than any other type of music. Look at most rock music for example. You have a rhythm guitarist essentially playing the same thing the whole song.

waterskier2007's avatar

yeah but in techno i seem to hear the same backbeat the whole time. a rhythm guitarist is there to provide just that, rhythm

let’s just agree those 2 cd’s are brilliant, for that matter, anyone up for Suspended Animation

shrubbery's avatar

Okey dokey. Sorry, don’t know them. I will go look them up!

iwamoto's avatar

Suspended Animation is John Petrucci’s solo album, it’s amazing, realy shows of his writing talent, he can even turn a cheesy song into a favorite, hehe

shrubbery's avatar

Ohh wow! Haha stupid me.

I don’t know how on earth we got this far off the question, haha!

Anyway, I want to let all you Flutherites know that vocals are extremely important to me! I have a hard time listening to instrumental music unless it’s a special occasion (i.e. writing a paper). I guess there’s a slight bias since I live in a genre in which probably 95% of the bands use vocals about 90% of the time.
