Is another tip required?

Asked by marinelife (62485points) August 21st, 2012

I am having a catered dinner. There is an 18% gratuity built in to the caterer’s fees. Do I still have to tip on top of that?

Only if you REALLY REALLY love the work and food ! !

No additional tip is required.

No additional tip unless they blow it out of the water.

I agree with the above.

I always wonder if the waiters really get all the tip? For instance at a hotel a party would have a tip included, but I assume the staff is given a flat amount, like $100 a night. I wonder how the numbers really work?

That’s a big gratuity… I agree, only if they go out of their way for you, should you tip more.

It’s not expected, but it would not be turned down, probably. And chances are that the company would take the extra and not distribute it to their workers, if that matters to you.

Give cash to the workers if they are amazing. It’s between you and them.

I don’t know how it is in the US, but in the UK if the gratuity (we call it “service charge”) is included in the bill, you generally don’t tip extra.

Yes, what @Adirondackwannabe said, directly to the people who helped, not added to the bill. I would have some $10 bills handy in case. Not a huge extra, but a little something. You can always double it if you feel compelled.

@JLeslie Well a GA would be nice. (I’m kidding, we’ve been maxed out forever)

No. I hate when they add the tip on automatically, because I feel like there’s no guarantee that the owner will give the entire thing to the staff, especially if the staff doesn’t know how much the bill is.

@Adirondackwannabe You’re right! And, I am usually very generous with GA’s. My apologies. You have one from me now.

@JLeslie Relax pretty lady. I was jerking your chain. :)

As has been said, if the service and food is exceptional I would probably tip more, as I like to be generous with my appreciations, but, you have no obligation.
If only one helper is extraordinary in their service you could always slip them a little something else under the table. Pun intended. lol

I see all tipping as a 2 part deal. One part is the actual service, the second and perhaps most important, to me, is a GREAT attitude!
I’d tip a server even more if they have a personality that I find exceptional, even if the food is not that great.

Thanks all for the great input.

I agree with most of the above. Only if it’s warranted, and directly to the workers. Enjoy your dinner!
