Non-Hispanic whites get more and better-quality sleep than people of other races, studies repeatedly show. Blacks are the most likely to get shorter, more restless sleep.

White and super sleeper. Not true for my S/O though. I snore.
If I lived in Englewood I probably wouldn’t sleep worth a shit either.
I would have thought poor quality sleep would depend on life style rather than race. I imagine it is very difficult to disentangle the two sometimes. I like my sleep; it is a valuable part of my day.
I’m a cracker, and I get fitful sleep, usually awake but resting at least 6 hours a night, and hard sleep 2 hours.
Thank you so much for sharing this article. For years, I have wondered if there was some sort of correlation between race and sleeping based upon discussions with friends. While the article shows that the study is still in its infancy, and it points out several valid reasons why it might not be race-related, it makes for a fascinating research project.

I can’t believe it, black people get sickle cell anemia, high blood pressure, and diabetes, now they can’t get a good night’s sleep. That really sucks!
I think it has more to do with money on everyone part. Plenty of people get sleep and still drag all day. It has more to do with quality of sleep than it does how long you sleep. I can sleep for 6 hours and get up the next morning like a rocket and some days I can sleep 8 hours and feel like I only slept 2 hours. The less I have on my mind before bed time the better I sleep. I think it has more to do with stress and the ability to let it all go before you go to bed.
I bet people who do puzzles before bed time also slept like a rock. I know it sends me into a deep slumber. It helps wipe away anything that has bugged or stressed you all day.

I often hear the faint “click” the thermostat makes each time before the a/c cycles on. In the summer it almost never really shuts off so the clicks are far and few between. It helps. Same in the heating season. My dog, most nights, lays right next to the bed on the floor and she wakes me every time her toenails touch the wall when she dreams and twitches…or farts.
If I get that dreaded breakthrough BS pain before its really time to get up well I get up then. I really don’t want to sleep too well because my wife is really badly disabled and might need me or if there is some kind of emergency I don’t want to be too “half in the bag” to get my ass behind me. We’ve had metal thieves lately working in the woods behind the house at night and the daytime which also weighs on me some. I have caught them before but they ran away and left a gun behind with some a/c evaporator coils they were in the process of owning. Fuckin dopers. The land owner has given me permission to go down there to clear the area in hopes if getting a conviction if we catch one. I’m sure they have seen all the deputies snooping around our place since the up- tick in activity. Since the gun incident I have to go down there with pooch with a pistol hot. Really hard to sleep after a patrol like that. I know it’s a matter of time before they start eyeballing our stuff /vehicles if they haven’t already. If I can just bust one it might spread the word that it’s bad to be there, but I don’t think it would last long. And we live in a little one horse town. Put em all in jail I’m tired of dealing with them.
Then after enough of that regimen I will end up getting more sleep one night because I can’t help it. I can see how stress and lifestyle affects sleep patterns no matter what race you happen to be.
Can a brother get a break? Lol.

The article didn’t use any examples from outside the U.S. It seems like more of a class issue. In America, white people are more likely to have the money to go to college, and a college degree means you’re more likely to get a white-collar, 9-to-5 job with a better income, which means an easier, more secure lifestyle. Like, imagine being married and driving every day to a 9–5 job in an office where you sit down at a desk. Then imagine being a single parent taking the bus to two jobs at odd hours where you stand on your feet. Obviously the first person will get better sleep.
White people are more likely to have the advantages that put them in the first camp. Not getting enough sleep is just one more shitty symptom of a society that favors white people, but there are exceptions. I’ve had jobs that started at 5 AM or ended at midnight, and I’ve done all combinations of working two jobs/ school and working/ working overtime in retail and restaurants and relied on public transit. Nowadays, my schedule is actually pretty reasonable and I drive to work, but it’s easy to understand how economics can play a role. When you’ve got bills to pay, sleep is less of a priority than making ends meet.
I am a heavy sleeper. I can sleep and had slept actually for 20 hours straight for whole three months.

What the heck is a none-Hispanic white? I am so confused. And according to your study I am black, who knew?
I can sleep for 13 hours if uninterrupted, but I’ve grown up living a very “white” lifestyle. Then again, if I only get 5 hours of sleep, I’m not affected.
