Why is my period lasting so long?

Asked by mambo (2754points) August 27th, 2012 from iPhone

I have had my period for two weeks now and it is getting really annoying. This happened before when I first started my birth control, but never happened since then.

However, I just transferred to a new university and I have been quite stressed out and engaging in a lot more activities. Could the stress be causing this?

I am worried about this because I am starting to feel a little sick. Please help!

You need to see your doctor, stress can cause it, but so can a lot of other things, you need to be sure. It could be a simple chemical imbalance or something more serious, and only your doctor can tell for sure.

Call your doctor you may need a different form of birth control… you also want to make sure your not becoming anemic.

Are you still taking the birth control? You said it happened before when you started birth control, does that mean you just started again?

Have you had sex in the last month?

Do you have nornal cramping?

Do you have pain on one side?

If you’re enrolled, there should be student health services. What’s keeping you from checking with them? Go for it. Get some relief.

Definitely see the doctor! I had this happen to me once, very heavy for two weeks, and ended up anemic. No fun.

@JLeslie I have continuously been taking my birth control. I have not stopped taking it since it was prescribed to me, nor have I missed a day.

I have had sex in the past month, but that was around the first of the month.

There is no pain at all and I have never had any cramps during my menstrual cycle.

Thanks for the advice everyone!

@mambo But this is the first month you started back on birth control? Is it the same prescription you used to take.

mambo's avatar

@JLeslie No, I started back in June. It is the same prescription I have been taking for a long time now.

I was away for a week. Did the bleeding stop? I worry that it could be an ectopic pregnancy, although it is very unlikely. Bleeding can also be caused by an infection, or God forbid cancer. Since this started kubd of out of nowhere and you have not changed your pill, I think you should have a doctor check it out.
