I’m taking an editing class right now and this term was thrown around a bit last week. Maybe I zoned out right when my teacher explained it, but I’m not exactly sure what it means.
Is this an actual term, or does it have an abstract meaning?

the time from the first issue to the last issue.
I would see it is follows:
- just starting out: few but loyal readers
– rise in popularity, more readers, more advertising, thicker issues, more acceptance
– peak readership – top of the world, lots of respect, lots of readers
– decline – too common, not fresh, less relevant, etc. means that readers leave
– death – not enough readers to continue to publish
It means the life cycle of one issue of the magazine. From inception through production into print until the next issue comes out.
Wow. Just above are two very different definitions. Better talk to a classmate who paid attention in class. I suspect it will be discussed in class again.
@Sunny2 I used to work for a magazine.
@marinelife I won’t question your authenticity and experience. Thanks for the information. I didn’t know that. there’s a LOT I don’t know.
@marinelife thank you! I’ve been in class a few more times since I posted this question, and your answer seems to make the most sense. :)
