If you are watching a live stream of the Democratic convention, what are your reactions?
You can watch here if interested. It’s early yet, when I write this question. I’ve seen Harry Reid, the Democratic women in Congress (which seemed far too reminiscent of a Playboy headline), a Senator from Colorado and Joseph P Kennedy, so far.
They are definitely shipping them through. Now they are doing a movie montage of Ted Kennedy. Also I saw Jimmy Carter. Is that what this is about? The old heros?
What do you think the focus of this convention is? What do you think the role of a convention should be? Is it even relevant any more? Or should we nominate candidates electronically, like the stock exchange?

TO provide an answer to my own question, I think one thing the convention does is provide the talking points for Democrats, so we can make our arguments to others in the upcoming campaign. These are the themes Obama will be pushing for the next few months.
How pissed is Patrick Kennedy’s wife at him that she would make him take a baby to interviews on MNSBC during a convention? Did he screw around on her while she was pregnant? He is a Kennedy…
There are some kickass women there. :)
@Mama_Cakes They had a brunette speak. Which weirded me out and got me wondering if all Republican women are blond and Democrats get the brunettes and Ginger. Or maybe it is a Fox News thing.
Apparently, only Obama wanted to go all in and save the auto industry.
I think he might need to get better advisors.
Lilly Ledbetter had me in tears.
My favorite line so far: “If Mitt Romney was Santa Claus, he’d fire the reindeer and outsource the elves.”
This is kicking the hell out of the Republican convention last week.
@filmfann Interesting. I miss the RNC; it was so much more amusing.
I know Castro is supposed to be a rising (Hispanic) star, but he’s kind of boring so far.
He’s a well-spoken Hispanic. What’s not to like? [This is said tongue in cheek. I am also a bit bored.]
But I did like the moment about we want affordable health care and Mitt Romney says….. [no, shouts the audience]. “Well,” says Castro, ‘he said ‘yes’, but now he says ‘no.’”
Is it just me but why is it that Julian Castro’s hairstyle looks much, much better than Marco Rubio’s. Rubio’s looks dourly Republican while Castro’s is easy to the eye.
His daughter is so cute, putting her hands over her ears at the loudness of the ovation for him. Also, did you notice the roar when she shook her head as the camera was on her?
And now the first lady.
Is anyone else being distracted by her hair?
Dang, listen up! : )
“Being President does not change who you are, it reveals who you are.” Good one.
It’s so formulaic. She’s a good actress speaker to be able to sell all that so well.
Agree. Formulaic. Sticking to just the basics.
“Our dreams may not be fulfilled but we hope our children’s will.” Ayn Rand just burped.
Do you think she was channeling Sally Fields?
I tried straming it on my nook but it told me due to copyrights its blocked in my country(im in the us)
I thought she looked really pretty and the dress was great.
Marco Rubio (“Mentiroso”) was cuter, I thought, despite his Republican hairstyle. He looks like a young Desi Arnaz, aka Ricky Ricardo.
Sadly that is all they have is old news reels of great days gone by. To have a convention that is sugar coating all the things that haven’t happened that magically will happen IF he gets another 4 years to make good on his self-professed incomplete he gave himself is tenuous at best. Even pretty dresses, op-eds and a maniacal Chris Mattews can’t possible mask the odor of a failed administration that cannot for even one second admit to the problems the didn’t or couldn’t solve. Being honest and humble would go a long way to wooing a very doubting public hungry for answers. Maybe this election Obama will actually present real solutions to the real problems we face. Not holding my breath AGAIN!
It’s only Tuesday, and we’ve already seen twenty times the clarity of plan than the Republicans were able to produce in three days.
@mazingerz88: I DVR’d it as I have a little girl who’s starting kindergarten tomorrow and so I had to keep things quiet here. I saw his quotes on FB and the looked great.
Clinton’s succinct paraphrasing of the GOP platform:
They’re saying, “We left a big mess for Obama, but he didn’t clean it up fast enough, so put us back in charge”.
Nice. :-)
I loved Clinton’s attempt to educate the people of the United States. He went pretty long, which is typical. I thought he had some good lines, but (can y ou believe I’m saying this), I wish he would have edited it and made it even more succinct.
He doesn’t get to do it, get all that solid attention at that unique moment in time, often enough. At that moment he was a political rock star without a tour. He relished it. And so did I. My fave line…“Here’s what happened.” : )
@Brian1946
Moot point because the gist is still the same, but here’s what Clinton said according to this source:
In Tampa, the Republican argument against the President’s re-election was pretty simple: we left him a total mess, he hasn’t cleaned it up fast enough, so fire him and put us back in.
