What is causing the Fluther at capacity messages?

Asked by LostInParadise (32186points) September 5th, 2012

It happened twice in the last two or three days that I could not get to the site for several hours. Are we experiencing growing pains? Is there work being done on the hardware or software? Is there some way that we might be told in advance that the site will not be available for a while? I get nervous every time this happens, because I have been at 2 or 3 Q&A sites that went defunct.

When it happened to me, I re-entered www.fluther.com into my address bar and it came right up. It appears that the problem is somewhere in the address.

The thought of Fluther going away suddenly and without warning is scary. It would be a kind of lost feeling, I think.

Maybe it depends on the computer. It just happened again. This time I hit refresh and everything was okay.

Several days ago we had a server hardware problem, and we were down for a few hours because of that. That was unexpected, so we couldn’t give advance warning. Other than that, we haven’t taken the site down at all recently, and I haven’t gotten that error. You might want to try clearing your cache (history/cookies) and restarting your browser. If that doesn’t solve the problem, please let me know. Thanks!

I wondered what had happened. I thought it was just me.

Relax. Auggie just spilled her Diet Dr. Pepper on the Fluther machine.

It is still happening to me on IE but not on google chrome.

@augustlan: When that happens, you post a note to the Fluther Facebook page, so people can check there if unable to access the site, yes?

augustlan's avatar

@hearkat I usually do, but this time the crash happened while I was offline. I didn’t even know about it until later, and the site was already up and running by the time I got here. I probably still should have posted on the FB page, but it didn’t occur to me this time. Sorry!

@augustlan: No apology needed. When I said “you” I meant the Fluther powers that be, not just you, specifically. After all, you have a life offline, too!

If this keeps up, I’ll take a look (after my honeymoon) and get things back on track.
