Why do you think Monsanto is never covered in the mainstream media?

In looking at another question I realized that this company is never really in any news stories. I have heard about it for years & have watched a documentary or two but that is it. Its like they are untouchable. In anything I have seen they have done some pretty reprehensible things especially in some third world countries. Why are not the Al Gores and Greenpeace calling them out? They mess with our food sources , have put hard working farmers into penury thru litigation, but they always get a pass. The general public seems clueless about what they do or that they even exist.I would like to see their butts dragged out into the light of close scrutiny. Patents on food plants, sue the farmer out of business because a neighbouring farm’s seed blew onto yours & you don’t have a licence to grow their patented plants? Am I the only one who is very worried about this?

The MSM thrives on interesting stories, and at the moment, Monsanto is fundamentally boring. Especially during campaign season. The Supreme Court has already ruled that a GMO is intellectual property and may be patented.
It’s a classic case of money and power combining forces that make them untouchable, just like politicians and all government The Monsanto corporation is as evil as they come and then some.
What sources are you referring to as the mainstream media? I’ve seen many stories about Monsanto over the years in The New York Times.
Don’t bite the hand that feeds you?
I not sure I’d agree they’ve gotten a pass, but as large and diverse as they are, I can see why one might be expected to see them dragged out more frequently. They took a couple big knocks in the 70’s with saccharin and dioxin. I think recently it’s been more overseas stuff that’s been in the news. With the notable exception of their GMO products particularly when someone starts finding resistant and tolerant weeds and there’s an ongoing(?) DOJ investigation.
It is somewhat surprising that more isn’t heard, the cynic in me says it’s because it involves too much science and farming isn’t as media friendly as global warming. Some articles you might be interested in: NYT, SciDaily, NPR 1 2, BW
And yes, I find their business practices and legal wins more than a bit disturbing.
Ok so there has been some media coverage but it comes in & flows out & is treated like its just treehuggers doom saying again. Why is there not a general outcry, why are we not doing our best to strong arm our representatives to take up this issue. Why are we so lackadaisical about them. ? I can understand someone patenting a friggin’ flower but food? Their crap escapes into the wild & contaminates someone else’s . And I get sued because now my crop has their patented DNA? Is anyone giving any thought as to what they can do to the food supply? If I let my imagination loose it makes me wonder if they didn’t also put up the guardian stones and are planning to let us unwashed masses literally eat ourselves to death.
As always, to get your answer: follow the money.
It’s the EXACT SAME reason why David Kirby the author of Animal Factory (a detailed account of the effects of these huge factory farms upon every aspect of our lives and health) was unable to secure interviews on the book segments of the main large networks. It would anger too many of their corporate sponsors.
He did appear on Imus, but that was a rarity and it’s FBN rather than the larger stations. And Imus rarely gives an eff about the wishes of his corporate bosses because his program brings in the kind of ratings and money that enable him to do so.
But this book quickly passed into relative obscurity unlike others getting a bump from their media blitzes. Have you even heard of it? I rest my case.
And speaking about nefarious dealings overseas, that’s where all the big tobacco companies now get to sacrifice the health of the people for the sake of profit. As long as it’s not here in the good ol’ USA, apparently we’re willing to turn a blind eye to that as well.
Call me cynical if you wish but the genuine interests of the public at large rarely trumps big money corporate interests. And Monsanto is as big and moneyed as they come.
I’ve seen several stories about them this year.
@phaedryx do you remember where? I watched a very well done documentary on the Discovery channel I think about 6 months or so ago but nothing else. At least here in Canada they are not in any media. Of course I am pretty rural, & as the lone hand on the farm time to get to see or read is limited.
I would love to see them get their comeuppance. Of all the things I see going to hell in a handbasket they scare me the worst. Its sci-fi with evil genius’ come to life. Don’t get me wrong I have no problem with science but even the big rich pharmas have to toe a line. Flexible to be sure but Monsanto just toots along blithely making their billions on the backs of humanity.
Its the samed with farmed fish. once free there is no way to coax “em back into a pen. According to the aforementioned documentary they have contaminated species of maize in Mexico that have been around for thousands of years. People do not realize that once their patented crap is in stuff there is no undoing it. We can say GMO is safe not to worry , but saying is not knowing or having definitive proof. The stuff hasn’t been around long enough to be sure what their dicking around within a plant’s genome does to the human body. I trust academia as much as I do politicians or used sock sellers.. So who do we turn to? Who is actively pursuing them?
I know they would label me an ignorant, uneducated, old fashioned country bumpkin,( all of which is true) who is scared cause I’m too stupid to understand what a wonderful thing they are doing but I didn’t get this old & ugly by trusting any one with my food sources.
Sorry this turned into a bit of a wild eyed rant but I just don’t understand why more learned, well knowns aren’t growing ‘nads and going after this.
@tacres I get most of my news from online news aggregators. I know I saw a several articles around the supreme court ruling and their fines in Brazil.
It’s always interesting to follow the money around
$2,930,000 is pretty good chunk of change, huh?
Hell yeah. I wouldn’t turn it down . Well maybe I would ,considering it“s ill-gotten gains. I’m just scared of them pushing out the real farmers with their deep pockets & litigious nature. Glad to hear they got their fingers rapped but the fines were to them I am sure just pocket change.
