Diagnoses needed: What is wrong with me?

Asked by Aster (20028points) September 9th, 2012

I was feeling fine but after a 14 year old scalp cyst became too large to stand I broke down and had it taken off five days ago. I had six shots all around it and half an hour of extreme tugging and pulling as she stitched up the large gap. There is a slight dip in the space now. Ten days before this I had a root canal with no crown placed until October. I awoke this morning with swollen, yellow eyelids that she had said may turn black and blue. I am not in any pain but I feel sort of dizzy and weak enough that I don’t think I should drive. I get at least nine hours of sleep but after I’m up a couple hours the weakness sets in. What is wrong with me? That pilar cyst surgery was not the “fifteen minutes” I had read about. It was half an hour . She gave me an ice pack and prescription for pain pills I haven’t needed plus extensive instructions. She was assisted by an RN. Thank you.

Members of Fluther cannot diagnosis anything over the Internet.

Please, call your doctor about your symptoms.

I’m confused about one point. What does the root canal have to do with the cyst removal?

Taciturnu's avatar

Yeah… I think you need to schedule an appointment. Or at least call your doctor! It could be related or totally unrelated. Best of luck to you. Hope you’re feeling better soon!!!

Jake, I was wondering if two “surgeries” in three weeks might have been too much to handle. When I said “diagnoses” I meant guesses, really. Like, maybe someone else had the same thing happen to them at some point.

I wouldn’t wait. A cyst can be a serious infection. Did your doctor explain why you may get black and blue eyelids? Was the cyst close to nerves near the eye?
In the mean time. Put some ice on your eyelids or witch hazel to reduce the swelling, but do see your doctor asap. That does not sound like a normal reaction to a cyst unless it was on your face right between your eyes.

I diagnose you should call your doctor instead of asking perfect strangers over the internet.

Seriously, why do people keep doing this? Is there still someone out there who doesn’t know listening to the internet is a bad idea?

Yellow only on the eyelids? Like when a bruise turns? Or, yellow eyes and skin in general? Is your urine very dark or even brown? Yellow eyes means liver problems to me, but you are saying eyelids, so maybe not. I definitely think you have to go to the doctor ASAP. In fact I would page him now to see what he says. I don’t remember what country you are in, but if you are currently outside of regular business hours you will actually get to speak to a doctor rather than a receptionist gatekeeper at the office. Sucks. :( Let us know what happens. Hope it all resolves quickly.

No one can really give a real diagnosis over the internet. They can only offer their opinions and experiences. Doctors may not know everything but at least they can write you a prescription if you need it. My opinion is you should really see a doctor for your situation.

@JLeslie she told me when stitching me up, “that was a big cyst; you may have black eyes from this.” I am the same except for puffy, light yellow eyelids that may turn blue tomorrow or may not. I’m anxious to see, actually. It’s not as if I wasn’t warned. But the fatigue concerns me. I can’t shake it. I know I eat a LOT of sugar.
The cyst was not on my face. It was on my hairline , near the center, where bangs would start for fourteen years! She said it was not cancer but a pilar cyst.

@Aster Yellow usually comes after the black and blue when it is related to black and blue and not something else. The yellow area can be much larger than the original black and blue area, that would be normal. When did you have the cyst removed? I am having trouble finding that information.

Aster's avatar

It was removed five days ago, a week after my root canal. I know what you’re saying. Black and blue is followed by yellow but this is the opposite. My forehead has been slightly swollen too but I’m not sure it is now.

It sounds like you may have an infection, that may have been caused by the fact that they did not put a crown over your root canal, which seems odd that they would wait until October to do that. The mouth and any sores within your mouth is a good place for an infection to enter your blood stream. I would definitely call your doctor right away and remind them of the fact that you also had the non-crowned root canal ten days earlier.

Have you been taking your temperature? That is concrete evidence that requires no guessing from us.

Is the dentist doing your crown the guy that had you so upset here last week?

CuriousLoner's avatar

They did not put you any anti biotics?

@Aster I don’t understand why you say the opposite? It has been yellow since the day of the surgery and is turning black and blue? The yellow can start very quickly, within a couple days, and by day 4 and 5 can be widespread, if it is from trauma to the area. For instance when I had my accident the black and blue around my knee was basically around the left side of my right knee, maybe a 3–4 inch length/diameter, but the yellow was almost a foot long from upper calf to lower thigh. I am not questioning your analysis, I just am not understanding.

@gailcalled is right that if you have a temperature it is a clear sign this is an emergency. No matter what I think your doctor should have a look. At minimum she can just evlauate how the healingnis going. A slight fever right after the surgery, within the first 24 hours that went away, would not be very worrisome, but this many days out would be significant. But, you haven’t mentioned fever so I assume you don’t have one. I also don’t think yellow on your eyelids indicates an infection, but I’m not a doctor.

Please let us know what the doctor says so we know you are ok.

I have not had a fever; the yellow is gone today and was ONLY there yesterday . As far as going back to her to “take a look” I really hesitate to return to a very busy doctor bearing lethal weapons. The swelling is still there. I read on the internet that you can look like a monster for WEEKS after this surgery. I am so SICK of Vaseline in my hair, on the big scab and the sight of a pink dip in my skull. I am a self pitying mess but look worse than that. This is going to run into October , I just know it.

@Aster If you feel like it is getting better I agree. i would not go to the doctor either. I hate going to the doctor. I am not saying that as advice, just stating what I would do myself, which isn’t always the best thing. I have procrastinated going to the doctor for something that has been nagging me for three weeks, it is either nothing or deadly. Seriously, I cannot think of anything in-between. I finally decided I am going to call today and make an appointment, because last night I suddenly decided to be very worried about it.

Aster's avatar

that is how I think about most things: it’s either nothing or I’m dead . But actually, whatever it is always turns out to be neither. Why not tell us about it? Maybe we can help you to at least relax a little.

JLeslie's avatar

@Aster, I usually don’t think nothing or dead LOL. I have a weird painful itchy area near my knee. It feels sort of like a cyst, it is deep below the skin, my big fear would be if it were a DVT. I have genes (blood tests) that make me more likely to get DVT’s and I have close relatives who have had them. Most people talk about them being very painful and the area being red, but I read up a little a few days ago (even though DVT had first crossed my mind weeks ago, my usual self is not to think I am dying and to wait and see if something just goes away) and they can be asymptomatic, or minor symptoms like itching and discomfort, my very complaint. What I was not clear about is how deep the itching should feel? I guess I should get it checked at this point now that it is weeks, and if it is a DVT and breaks off I am likely stroked out or dead. I popped an aspirin last night. Hahaha. I really do not want to go to the doctor, but I guess I will.

gailcalled's avatar

^^^ Off-topic. Take it to PM’s, ladies, or ask another thread about DVT’s (whatever they are).

JLeslie's avatar

@gailcalled Well, @Aster said tell us, so I stated it in the thread. I see now that she has the Q in general, but it is her Q. Maybe she wants to switch it to social?

Deep Vein Thrombosis. Blood clot.

Was that root canal on an upper tooth?

Aster's avatar

Yes; an upper tooth . Still have some eyelid swelling and the hole where they removed the cyst is pink, black, red and crispy. I cannot take anymore Vaseline in my hair; washing it today. I’ve begun napping so the entire month must have been too much. At least there’s no pain. I’m glad about that.

Aster's avatar

@CuriousLoner no antibiotics. Vicodin which I haven’t touched and “you may get black eyes” but nope. I don’t get it.

trailsillustrated's avatar

You need to call the dr that did the root canal and get an emergency appointment- doesn’t sound really like it could be that but if it is, you are in trouble. Don’t wait.
