Do you prefer your umbrella to be short and compact, or long and solid?

Asked by ragingloli (52231points) September 12th, 2012

Do you prefer your umbrella to be one of those compact, folding, telescopic ones, or do you prefer the long, nontelescopic type that can double as a stick to hit people with?
Also, what is your gender, as my observations in the wild suggest that females tend to go for the small, while males prefer the big ones.

Look at shape of the rolled, thick compact umbrella versus the long skinny one. If you were a woman, which would you prefer?

Honestly though I’ve never owned an umbrella and don’t really use them unless someone around has one and its raining REALLY hard. But usually I’ll just wear something with a hood or a jacket. If I had to get one I’d probably get the longer one with some bad ass looking handle lol

I like the short folded ones because I get two “thwap“s for the price of one button push.

Well… it’s more like a thwap and twunk.

I prefer the long, nontelescopic ones. I find them fun to walk with. It makes me feel really authoritative by marching along the road hitting the pavement with an umbrella, like a walking stick. Yes, I am that sad. And for the record, I’m a girl. :)

syz's avatar

I don’t use or own an umbrella.

ZEPHYRA's avatar

Long and solid so I can sometimes stick it up certain people’s ass and open it!

jca's avatar

I don’t care how long it is as long as it’s not too short, but I do like a nice fat umbrella.

I’m looking for a long, thin umbrella that serves as a sheath to a high-quality sword. Hit people, hell! I want to run them through.

I prefer small and compact. I am female.

To be perfectly honest, I prefer a hat. Although I do currently have my “Big Gay Umbrella” which is the long skinny type, bought at Pride and all bright rainbow colours.

I always carry one of those short fold up ones in my bag, only because it fits in there. But I would really prefer to use one of the big, full sized ones, because they work much better in the rain.

The one that I have currently is black, but I like umbrellas with bright polka dots on them preferably pink. I also love the Parasol Shape style umbrella. I’m a female.

Most of the point of carrying an umbrella is to be able to swish it, swing it on your arm, use it as a cane, point emphatically at things… it has a thousand uses if it is long. The telescoping ones just make me sad.

Small, because I don’t like umbrellas in general because it’s more stuff to carry.

One that keeps rain off me, please.

I don’t care what type, and am very surprised to be answering such a prosaic question from your ‘prickley’ self about this.

wundayatta's avatar

Short, so I can carry it in a backpack easily.

For utility/convenience, I like the small, telescoping models so I can carry them in my purse or computer bag. In a deluge, nothing beats a high quality standard umbrella. I’m hopeful that technology will bring the two closer together at some point.

Both. I have a long, big umbrella in the car. I don’t seem to lose them so easily.

I also like to have a few small, telescopic umbrellas about that I can fit in my bag easily. I have bought many but if you wanted one now, I couldn’t find one. Bit like socks around here… they disappear.

Is this a euphemism?

digitalimpression's avatar

Interesting euphemism (or is it innuendo?).On the one hand, the literal question assumes you want to keep wetness off of your body.. while on the other hand…..

Bellatrix's avatar

I thought that too @janbb but decided not to go down that path.

MilkyWay's avatar

I like the small ones simply because they are small enough to fit in my bag, and are easy to carry.

janbb's avatar

I rest my case.

chyna's avatar

@jca Why do I feel like you aren’t talking about an umbrella?

Cruiser's avatar

I am partial to golf umbrellas. The fiberglass shaft for strength and safety are a comfort during the massive T-Storms we have here.

JLeslie's avatar

It depends. I usually have a short fold-up umbrella, but I actually prefer the long traditional, cane-like umbrellas. I like the usually wider covering, they generally are stronger on a windy day, and I like the bigger handle (I had understood it is safer, because if lightening hits the umbrella the plastic or wood handle keeps you safe, but maybe the metal used doesn’t conduct electricity?). I also am less limely to lose the larger one, and I like to lean on it when it is closed. However, if you pay a little more for a decent quality fold-up there is a difference between the cheapy ones and the better quality ones. But, the fold-ups can fit in a bag and take up less room in a car.

I’m female.

Mariah's avatar

I like the compact ones.

Knowing loli, he is gleaning something bizarre and sexual from this info. :P Don’t read into it too deeply, I just want something I can throw in my backpack.

Pandora's avatar

If we are really talking about umbrellas (lol) I don’t have a personal preference. I like to have a tiny one to carry in my purse if it looks like it may rain. But I also keep a huge one in my car in case it is going to pour.
So personal preference is tiny for showers.
Huge for downpours.

augustlan's avatar

Answering straight, I like the compact ones because they fit in the console compartment in my van. Female.

ucme's avatar

I don’t.

Nullo's avatar

In the days when I hauled absurdly expensive books around in a backpack, I favored the umbrella with the broadest spread. Similarly if I were sharing it. Now I have a car and no backpack, so I usually just skip the umbrella entirely, though in the rainy season I keep a compact and a full-sized in my car, just in case.

I have two umbrellas that are bigger than the average compact, but smaller than the standard umbrella. Where do those fall?

@uberbatman Got you covered.
