How to remove a chain link?

Asked by twiggles90 (85points) September 18th, 2012

I bought a new chain for my dirt bike. But its a couple links too long. Does anyone know the easiest way to remove 3 links?

The chain most likely has a master link that can bet disassembled. From there, it may be possible to remove the normal links. If not, there’s always boltcutters or the returns desk.

@Nullo‘s got it. Look for the master link or master clip .

You should get a chain breaker. It is like a hand held vice. A pin in the vice screws down on a link connector and forces it out allowing you take out as many links as you need. The Master link is always the last one so that both sides of the chain can be reconnected on the bike. This is also a good time to lubricate the chain.

Got it apart. Thanks

What @Ron_C said, but make sure you leave the pin in one side of the chain, if you take the whole pin out completely it’s a nightmare to get back in.
