I think my feet are swelling?

Asked by flash74686 (478points) September 18th, 2012

Okay so recently when I’ve put on shoes that have fit for years, they’re a bit snugger than they used to be. Some of them are fine, but others are too uncomfortable to wear anymore. Is it possible for feet to swell?

I’ve gained weight in the last year, but only ten pounds. Also, I don’t know if it’s relevant, but I recently moved to Manhattan from suburbia. I used to drive everywhere, even a block away, and now I’m walking. Could it be that walking around made my feet swell?

Just a random weird question. Nothing too dire.

Your feet may get wider over time as you use them. I’ve had to switch to specially-wide shoes in the last couple of years myself.

@Nullo is right. Weight gain does add to that effect, too.

Your feet could be swelling now that you’re on them more.

If your feet are actually swollen, try a cool epsom bath and elevation. For future, try purchasing shoes at the end of the day.

If you push on your feet with your finger does the dent stay there for a little bit? Feet growing or spreading, and having swollen feet from water retention is very different. Water retention can be a bad sign for serious health problems.

Your feet CAN swell. Be sure you are drinking enough water. Your feet also change size as you age. The arch may get lower just from using them (waking more) and make them wider. An AA may become an A. Mention this the next time you have a medical check up.

Since I was pregnant with my first child, my shoe size has, very gradually, gone from 8 A to 10.5 B. It crept up on me.

One day some shoes simply didn’t fit.

How is your blood pressure? People who retain water often have high blood pressure. If this is new I would have it checked out. If you can’t afford to go to the doctor, at least check it out the next time you are at the pharmacy.

yes, feet swelling and feet changing size are too different things. Are you eating more salty foods than you were?

Check your blood pressure but also ask yourself how much salt you are taking in. Water follows salt and there is a lot of it in food. You might not taste it but it’s there.
