What are your favorite dvd commentaries?

Asked by fundevogel (15511points) September 19th, 2012

So here’s the thing. Usually I don’t give a good gaddamn about dvd extras. Except commentaries. If there’s a commentary on a movie I own I assure you I’ve heard it at least once, Sometimes that’s it, but there are those that you visit from time to time like old friends. And then there are the one’s you’ve watched the movie with more than the original audio.

I can’t possibly be alone in this.

What are your favorites? What makes them special?

You are not alone. My favorite is the one from The Royal Tenenbaums, with commentary by Wes Anderson, the co-writer and director. The movie is quirky to begin with; hearing this guy tell the tales of what was going on in his mind are fascinating.

Another interesting movie commentary is from Ocean’s Eleven. Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, and Andy Garcia provide insight into the antics that took place while it was being filmed. It’s just fun.

The Star Wars IV commentary is very interesting if one is a fan of the series. It was added years after the original movie was made, so the comments are more from a reminiscing aspect than fresh.

Oh you have to listen to the commentary of Conan the Barbarian, and bear in mind that this commentary was recorded during Ahnold’s time as Governor.

“Oh, mahn I was so stoned in that scene! We wah way-sted!”
“Wow, I get laid a lot in this movie. It’s amazing!

In Casablanca, there is a commentary by Roger Ebert that is very good, though I disagree with him on the man-crush of Captain Renault on Rick.
There is also a good commentary by Quenton Tarantino on “True Romance”, which he wrote but did not direct.

@Seek_Kolinahr But that would mean having to watch Conan the Barbarian.

I enjoyed As Good as it Gets a second time with the commentary.

I enjoy TV show commentaries, with all their little weirdnesses… like Amy Sherman-Palladino walking out halfway through the only commentary she did in an episode of Gilmore Girls with no explanation, or Lucy Lawless trying to hide her kleenexes in the couch for an episode of Xena (she had a cold). Buffy the Vampire Slayer had some fun commentaries. I guess because the cast et al. on a TV show have to do so many of them, you get to see a little more of their personalities.

But I love Conan!

“Between the time when the oceans drank Atlantis and the rise of the sons of Aryas, there was an age undreamed of. And unto this, Conan, destined to wear the jeweled crown of Aquilonia upon a troubled brow. It is I, his chronicler, who alone can tell thee of his saga. Let me tell you of the days of high adventure!”

Honestly, I’ve seen it a kabillion times. My husband can quote the first hour. It’s great fun at drunken parties.

Well, to each his own.

The commentary for The Incredibles was very cool.

I’ll have to check some of these out for sure.

For what it’s worth my favorite seems to be the Tropic Thunder commentary with Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. It’s fun and interesting, but what really makes it is that Robert follows through with his line in the movie “Man, I don’t drop character ‘till I done the DVD commentary,” and does the whole thing in character. It’s pretty awesome. Actually Downey’s pretty fun to listen to on the Kiss Kiss Bang Bang commentary too so he’s probably just a good man to have around for a commentary in general.
