What is the strangest place you have seen or met someone you know personally?

Asked by TheProfoundPorcupine (2549points) October 6th, 2012

As a follow up to my question about the strangest place you have ever seen or met a celebrity I thought I would turn attention to people that you know personally and the strange places or situations where you have met or seen someone you know well. I will give you an example.

A few years ago I was driving home from another city and the journey was 130 miles. The first 60 miles is just this one main road with no towns or anything to drive through and just junctions and side roads leading you off it. I was driving along, my mind wandering and keeping an eye out for speed cameras when standing in a layby with no vehicle was my own doctor?? This was about 100 miles from home and miles from the nearest place, but there he was standing there.

Another example, a neighbour of mine was driving to an airport and getting on a flight to Egypt to discover their cousin was on the same flight and ended up being in the hotel room next to them in a hotel of over 500 rooms and in a resort with a number of hotels.

So where is the strangest place you have seen or met someone you know?

I ran into a fraternity brother at the baggage claim at the airport in Nice, France. He was there on a company reward trip, I was there with my family.

I have seen many people I know in odd places, but the one that springs to mind is this story. I was traveling by Greyhound to Colesberg which forms part of our “Klein Kharoo”. The distance was some 1400 Kl ms away from my home town. Naturally the bus would stop periodically in strange places, where all you see are tumble weeds blowing now and then. We stopped in an odd town that probably is not even on the map, and there was a colleague of mine buying a burger. Turns out he was on a Greyhound bus too making his way back from Cape Town. It really is a small world at times.

At the Rodin Museum in Paris I ran into one of my favorite students with his family. I was with my family. We chatted a bit and went our separate ways.

Most recently was when I joined Twitter and the first face I saw (giving me standard advice on setting up the account) was Fluther’s very own Ben. Okay, I know I don’t know Ben, but it did feel kinda special joining the huge phenomenon that is Twitter and being “greeted” by someone from here :-)

It was when I was inspecting a hotel in Baltimore, MD (East Coast US). In the restaurant was a man who looked eerily familiar. I went over and asked, “Pardon me. Is your name Carl?” Indeed it was. It was my cousin that I hadn’t seen in ~20 years. He lives in Seattle, WA (West Coast US), and I live in a central region. It still amazes me that we happened to be in the same place at the same time. If I hadn’t gone down to the restaurant for a coffee refill, it never would have taken place.

Met a nice japanese family once in Japan and the lady asked me to come to her prayer meeting. I thought why not. I’ll get to know my neighbors. Then they began to chant in tongues. Or so that is what I was told. They said that the angels possess them and speak through them in their language. (Well my angel must’ve gone out in vacation. LOL) I started to make things up and they smiled like they understood what I was saying. I just didn’t know what else to do! Then I said that I had forgotten that I had to go get the kids from school. After that, I tried my best to avoid them. She did invite me back but I explained that my faith doesn’t approve of such things and she left it alone.

I met my first love bouncing pebbles off her helmet as we waited deep below ground to climb a limestone chimney that led to a huge cavern, but I don’t think that’s what you meant.

I ran into one of my high school boyfriends about 10 years later, in a different city than we’d grown up in, while standing in line on election day at our local polling place. I was so shocked to see him that I asked the most inane question possible: “What are you doing here?” He laughed and said, “The same as you, I imagine. Voting!” Neither of us had any idea we’d both moved away to the same area until that point.
