I want my 8-year-old daughter to learn how to type. What software/system would you recommend?

I think it is an important skill and I think she’s old enough now.
I have linux and os x machines at home, or I could run windows xp in a vm if I needed to.

Mavis Beacon has long been the standard for teaching typing.
And yes, she is old enough; my school taught me typing in the second grade. I’m rather surprised most schools don’t do that.
I learned in school with a couple different game type programs but I cant remember what any of them were called. I learned how to type a lot better when I started playing Typing of the Dead. Essentially its just House of the Dead but instead of shooting zombies with a light gun you type in the words or letters above their heads. Dont know that it’d be enjoyable for an 8 year old girl though.
I’m sorry I don’t have anything to add. I wanted to look at this question because I also have an 8 year old daughter who is learning how to type on the computer. Great suggestions here. Thanks everyone. @uberbatman My daughter would love Typing of the Dead. Sounds fun! We’ll have to check it out. =)
I also learned with Mavis Beacon, but the reviews I’ve read so far, for current versions, are mixed (especially “Mavis Beacon Keyboarding Kidz”).
@gailcalled thanks for the list
@jerv many states are teaching typing instead of cursive handwriting in elementary school now; our state isn’t one of them.

I’d just teach her the basic positions on a keyboard. Phones are all different and with technology changing so much, the keyboard is the only thing that seems to be lasting.
I used one that had Casper the friendly ghost in it. It was very cute and fun as I recall. Now I am a master typer.
Find an old Speak and Spell, or one of the aps online that imitates it.
It’s need time and patient rather than soft or system
