They’re really ugly. But, I like dogs, it’s not like I wouldn’t love a Pomeranian just because I think they’re ugly.

Yeah, I know what you’re saying. lol

Oddly enough, I think they’re kind of cute. From a distance. But I don’t care for dogs much in general, and I am especially averse to little dogs, who frequently have far too much energy and yap for my taste.

I love dogs, I think Poms are super cute and fuzzy and soft and they love to give little licky kisses. The ones that I’ve known have been very sweet and loving. Although I have seen some (that I didn’t know) that had a tendency to growl at strangers and maybe even nip at people.

I wouldn’t have one. I am not really into little dogs. I find them a bit yappy. I like medium sized to bigger dogs. I doubt I would choose a Pom myself, but lots of people really love them so they can’t be all bad. Hope you are doing okay.

My dog was part Pom, but he wasn’t yappy.. He was much cuter than a Pom.

I know of someone who is gravely ill and will have to get rid of his three Poms. He is a friend of a friend. My friend asked if I wanted one. I am leaning more towards no.

I do feel as though I would like to adopt/rescue another dog in the new year, though.

It’s very soon. I can understand your reticence. I also saw the other member’s post who suggested getting another dog sooner rather than later. It seems as if your friend needs homes for these Poms, you would be adopting and giving another dog a happy outcome. It’s a big decision I know. I don’t want to think about when my boy Schnauzer passes. That time is drawing closer although he is very fit and healthy right now. I can’t imagine wanting another dog for a while. Can you go and play with the dogs for an hour or two and see how you feel? Don’t make the decision then, but it might help you to make up your mind.

I think they’re cute but noisy.

Little dogs have attitudes I don’t generally agree with.

Not fond of them. Both of the ones I have known personally were obnoxious little piss boxes.

Mama_Cakes's avatar

I’ve decided against it. I’ll wait ‘til I’m fully ready. Right now is not the time.

Dogs will behave the manner in which you allow them to. They don’t have to be yappy.

Poms are cute. They look like little teddy bears.

rojo's avatar

@tinyfaery so do teddy bears and they are a darn sight less trouble and cost much less too feed. PLUS my teddy has never peed on my stuff.

That sounds like a personal problem.

If I had my way, I’d have the guy on the right.

They are delicious.

My friend has a Pomeranian. He is very loving and sweet.
He always wants to be at the center of attention, which can get a little annoying. But his sweet little face and paws make up for it. He gets really hyper when he sees me, but then he calms down when I pick him up.
I think they’re cool dogs overall.

I don’t really know what their usual behavior is like, but I think they’re super adorable, one of the cutest breeds out there in my opinion!

OpryLeigh's avatar

All the Poms that I have known have been very sweet but consistent and regular training is necessary to prevent them developing small dog syndrome and turning into yappy, spoilt brats!

I had one as a kid, best dog we ever had. Mine was slightly crossed with something else so her face was a bit softer somehow.

@Mama_Cakes – I just noticed this question and the later one about the basset hounds. I have shown many poms and have always liked them. For small dogs they are pretty tough and are not any more vocal than other breeds. I have not found barking to be relative to size. Hounds tend to howl because they are genetically disposed to do so, but small dogs are not similarly disposed to yap, that is conditioning.

Poms if clipped down with a 4 blade all over truly do look like teddy bears. They are cute and relatively smart. I have seen them do well in obedience and even watched one recently in an agility comp and it did very well.

If I had my choice between a basset and a pom, I would take the pom. But really have you gone to a dog show and looked around? There are I think about 160 different breeds recognized by the AKC. If you go to a show and talk to the owners, they will give you the real story of their breed. They will tell you the pros and cons, they are not trying to sell pups, they want to match people and dogs in forever homes. So if you haven’t been to one lately, I would suggest you go and have a good look. Pick up a catalogue on the way in and check to see where and when the breeds you have an interest in are being shown. Talk to the handlers when they are finished showing. Watch obedience, it is a fun day out and you will probably see breeds you have never seen before!

@rooeytoo Sounds like a good idea. Weird thing is, I can name, I would say, 95% of breeds if I’m shown pictures. I used to read up on them when I was younger. In fact, when watching the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, I would call out their breed names before the announcer did. My partner was impressed. Haha

@Mama_Cakes – you are then more knowledgable than I by far. I have been out of the USA for 15 years and so many new breeds have been recognized, I don’t know half of them anymore. Hope you find the puppy of your dreams!
