Can silver-plated flatware be safely washed in a dishwasher?

Yes. I run silver and silver plated utensils etc. through the DW and have never had an issue considering the frequency is not very often.

I was taught to wash the silver knives by hand, in order to not loosen the fastening between silver handle and stainless blade. Who knows whether that has any validity at all.

You will be wearing some of the silver off.

GQ. I have a set but have never used them. According to several websites, it’s fine to put them in the dishwasher. When you think about it, it makes sense. They are still going to be subjected to hot water, but don’t risk getting as scratched or worn from individual cleaning.

Like Gail, I grew up hearing the warning of not putting the knives in the dishwasher, be it silver or silver-plated. This has to do with the fact that knives are usually two pieces connected. Maybe the intense heat can loosen the parts. And like Gail, I have no clue if there is any truth to it.
