I like Elvis or Truman.

Elwood or Barney. (Are you getting the one that you posted a video of earlier?)

Mama_Cakes's avatar

@Pied_Pfeffer No, there’s a pup that we’re considering.

And I had a female Bassett for many years. They are wonderful (albeit slobbery) dogs. Good luck with yours.

Considering the very unique bark of Bassets I like “Piper”

Sherman
Otis
Clem
Clyde
Hoover

Or…you can use my old coonhounds name, and he lived up to it…..Ruckus! lol

ETpro's avatar

He’s adorable. He reminds me of this guy.

Coloma's avatar

I knew a female Basset named Sybil Stubbs once upon a time. :-p

Someone recommend Shortstop. Kinda cute.,

DigitalBlue's avatar

Damn, I was sold on the girl name.

My husband loves Cletis. He wanted to name our female basset hound Cletis. It’s kind of a silly name, but I do find it strangely appropriate for a bh.

Mama_Cakes's avatar

I do, too, DB. :)

Clem is cute for a boy.

Coloma's avatar

Oooh, yes, Cletis is good too! It has to have a southern twang IMO. Hounds and the south just go together like cookies and milk. I have always wanted a female Bloodhound and I would name her either Georgia or Peaches. haha

DigitalBlue's avatar

My basset is Lady, but Peaches would have been absolutely adorable. My beagle is Pickles. Pickles n Peaches. Aw, cute.

Coloma's avatar

I know! Name him Opie Taylor. lol

Many years ago we had a basset who’s name was “Wilford” We got him that way and for some reason he looked like whatever a “Wilford” should look like. He used to run in the backyard with a plastic beach pail in his mouth so his eyes were covered by it and we were always waiting for the day he ran into something, and destroyed it.

What a super-cute pooper! I like the name Boone or Marley, Alistair, Nigel or Sherlock.

Did the parents have the necessary health checks done before they were including eyes for PRA? I used to have a breed that was plagued with PRA and I know that bassets often have the problem also.

Always good to be sure the parents were checked for all health problems known in that particular breed.

He is cute as can be!

ETpro's avatar

What’s clear from this discussion is, no matter which name you pick, you won’t satisfy everyone. :-)

Sunny2's avatar

Sherlock. I can just see him in a detective hat.

Coloma's avatar

Or you can go with a southern food theme, like Gumbo or Grits or hambone. lol
Oooh, what about ” Jethro.” haha

Mama_Cakes's avatar

Grits is cute!

@Mama_Cakes: Something a bit more macho, such as Galveston Biceps?

Or Anchorage Tattoo?

Or Novosibirsk Knuckles?

Socrates, Bob, Johnny

Mama_Cakes's avatar

@gailcalled Haha. Be nice. :)

(In regards to the kitten: For the record, it was my partner who kept coming up with names/changing them, not I. I had one from the beginning, but she didn’t care for it. :)).

gailcalled's avatar

@Mama_Cakes: Srsly, I love these names. My paternal grandfather, who adored dogs, gave us a beagle named Larchmont Jeffrey. We called him Jeff.

Here’ is King, one of my grandfather’s many Great Danes. He was subtitled, “The Gentle Giant.” I used to ride him. Sorry about the qualitiyof the photos. 1940–1941.

Huckleberry hound!
I also like the name “Finn.” Huckleberry hound/Finn. :-)

For a girl, an adorable name would be Clementine (Clem, for short).

My partner’s uncle has a hound. Her name is Winnifred. Most of the time she gets Winnie, but when she’s bad she gets Fred. ha!

He used to have a cat called Pyewacket (named after the cat from “Bell, Book and Candle””. I’ve always loved that name).

Coloma's avatar

I knew a goat named Winnifred. She was a character. :-)

glacial's avatar

@Mama_Cakes Aww, I’ve always wanted to name a cat Pyewacket for that reason!

Coloma's avatar

What about Basil?
I had goldfish named Basil, Cedric and Edna once. lol

deni's avatar

For some reason I’m feeling “Harry”. Definitely a human name. I think human names suit cats and dogs best. Roger, Wilbur.

Coloma's avatar

^^^ Wilbur is great for a hound. :-)

ucme's avatar

Bertie, allsorts of options here.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Mama_Cakes From his picture he looks like an Elmer or Barney or a stretch, Wolfgang.

cookieman's avatar

My Bassett hound’s name was “Dazey” – as in Dazed and Confused.

Coloma's avatar

I like to give silly titles to my pets, one of my cats was named “Gadwicke ( silent “e” ) son of Smethwicke of Mt. Aukum”.
My goose “Marwyn” was originally named ” Marilyn Merangue” until he revealed he had a penis. That was 14 years ago but it was very unsettling and I had to modify his name. lol
Horses are always fun, but their titled names get reduced to barn names. My horses registered name was Little Ruby Jewel Regis but he went by “Budgie.” My other horse was named “April rangers mighty mite” but she was called ” Pissy.” hahaha

@cookieman Perfect! I love it!

One thing that is freaking me out is eye issues with Bassets. Namely, Glaucoma. It is making me think twice about getting one.
