My toothless cat is becoming a biter? Why?

Asked by deni (23141points) November 1st, 2012

Question #3000 I have asked about Barnabus here on Fluther.

My cat has no teeth but as of late he has begun biting me a LOT. He’s always been a licker. He’s constantly grooming me. But as of the past few months he will lick me a couple times, and then bite the same spot a couple times. Move on to somewhere else, lick, then bite. I actually like the way it feels, obviously it doesn’t hurt cause he’s just gumming me. But I do wonder, is he doing this because his gums are bothering him? And if so can I offer some relief? And if not, why is he doing it? It is bizarre. Should I get him a chew toy? (That question even sounded ridiculous as I typed it)

This is just a curiosity mostly. As always, thanks to you other cat freaks out there who answer all my dumb little cat questions like this one.

Didn’t Barnabas recently have a move with other cats involved?

Some cats bite as communication for you the groom-y to remain still and allow the groomer (Barnabus) to go about the business at hand.

@SpatzieLover hahahahaha!! No I never moved in with the friends who had cats. We now live a solitary life on our own, Barnabus and I. He is more of a handful than ever. Lonely all the time even amidst a love fest!

So he “gums” you? How weird. At least it couldn’t hurt much.

Yes I just got home from work and he comes running over and just did it to my NECK!!!! What a weirdo!!!!!!!!!

Hahahahahahha I was gone last night and just got home (it’s about 4 PM) he’s at it like never before. Very hard licking, then goes into 6–8 good “bites” , moves locations, repeats licking biting.
