I want to learn more about building websites. Any advice?

If you are starting from scratch I would suggest going to the bookstore and buying a book on HTML(XHTML) and CSS. That will take care of you.

The Internet is great for filling in little holes of knowledge you are missing. But you want to build your house on a solid foundation. And a good book is the best way to go about that.

Most books will get you started. I can’t really recommend one. I have one from five years ago that I use all the time.

Johnpowell is absolutely right, a starter’s book is the best way to go.
As for recommendations, I can offer a couple: HTML for Dummies is a good one, as is anything published by O’Reilly.

make some free sites using yahoo geocities page builder or http://weebly.com. good practice and its free. depends if your wanting a career in webdesign or just to know how to do it for business or promotion…..

Well, I did it and never bought a book… I recomend first and foremost learning HTML (and the newer version XHTML) and the best place to do that, I have found is: http://www.w3schools.com/default.asp

Of course you do not have to learn it, but if you ever have a problem you cannot figure out you can at least wade through the code. If you don’t know basic code it will be like looking at a foreign language.

After you have a grasp on writing html then I recommend investing in different software. There are cheap software bargains out there but buyer beware, some aren’t very compatible with anything else (Java script and uploading on ftp.)

I think Wordpress is the best to create a website. It is open source content management system that is based on Php and MySql. Without tedious coding you can easily create websites. Wordpress has a great set of features with which we can build very attractive websites.
